Going in May. Is there good fishing there and are there any charters that anyone recommends?

Everything that I've ever seen, heard or read is that the waters around Jamaica are mostly over fished or fished out. As such, there's not much of a charter fleet. I've seen and heard of folks chartering a local fisherman on their Panga. Don't expect much. These guys aren't professional guides. They are opportunist willing to make a buck. They most likely will not have high end gear/tackle. They are not trophy fishermen. They are subsistence fishermen.

I would contact whatever resort you plan to stay at and see if they have a recommendation or are able to make a referral.

There's a reason that Jamaica is not a trophy fisherman's destination.

don't waste your time trying to fish in Negril. I've been there several times and its a wonderful place to visit but fishing is pretty much worthless. You will get some locals in some small boats that will offer to take you fishing but they really want to sell you drugs. lol.

I had a very interesting experience fishing out of Negril several years ago. Some guy on the beach named "Elvis" set the trip up for me. Went out with some local fellas trolling for tuna with hand lines. After a brief encounter and discussion in some other language with the local and heavily armed authorities we were off. We weathered out an afternoon thunderstorm about 2 miles off of the beach front while moored to a bouy. Fishing was great! Between me and the two locals, we landed over 20 tuna in about 4 hours. My hands did get a little hot when a baracuda decided to take a chunk out of one of the fish I had hooked up. It stripped about 100 yards of line through my hands in seconds! It was an experience like no other. Not sure if it was good or bad, but it was something I'll never forget. One of the intern chefs at out resort (Couples Swept Away) offered to prepare the fish for us the next day before our departure. We had fresh grilled tuna, vegetables and fresh breads prepared right in front of us at the beach front grill. Here are several pictures from the trip. My wife was sure to take one before I left the beach. That way in case they didn't bring me back, she at least got a photo of the boat and the guy driving.
