Hi guys, I'm new to TFF and fly fishing. I've been on the hunting forum for some time but fly fishing is slowly becoming my new hobby.

Here is my question; I have an option to purchase a Sage Vantage 8'6' 5wt with a Ross CLA I for $350 bucks. I think it's a deal...any comments?

Vantage outfits typically run $395, which includes rod, reel, line and backing. But I concur on what Robin stated.

I haven't fished the Vantage, but I my first fly rod was a 4 wt Sage Launch (which the Vantage replaced), and I still fish it.

Thanks guys...it's new money on the rod and reel. A buddy bought it and never used it. It does not have backing or line. I will have to put that on. Any suggestions on that are welcome as well.
Thanks again,
Jim

I've fish with Scientic Anglers and Wulff lines, but Wulff triangle taper is my favorite. I think its just preference though, just like rods and reels.

If you live anywhere near the DFW area, it would be worth your time to come out to Bonham state park on Sat, 1/21 (next week). There will be a whole bunch of folks available to answer questions. It would significantly shorten your learning curve.

No doubt that this is a good rod/reel, but whether it is a good deal for you depends on where you plan to fish and what you plan to fish for. For example, if you plan to use this setup to fish for redfish on the flats, then a 8'6" 5 wt might not be the best choice.
