What's a ballpark estimate on getting into it? Let's say all the basic tools and equipment.

If your in the Dallas area, you can do this for about 150.00. I'm thinking about it. Says you get to keep all the tools.

I signed up for this class about 2 weeks ago. There is an option for one or two days. I am doing the two day thing. Tools you recieve are manual and simple. Based on my research you can expect to spend up to a grand for quality tools and supplies. Cabelas has a number of the things you would need to get started.

I think the Mudhole class would be a good introduction into rod building...They do offer a lot of help to promote the craft (and profit=)
It be a good way to get hands on experience, and ask questions..Plus I think you do keep the hand wrapper and tools, which is a huge bonus, but don't quote me on that.
I like to put together a small DFW rod building club to help promote it in this area and share techniques, tips, and beer.
Hopefully that can come to light in the near future.

I personally build all my own tools for rod building..I tweak them constantly ,but thats half the fun!

If you sign up for the class enjoy it!..You'll eventually find your own way of things that works best for you!
My advice is to really concentrate on performance first and getting use to packing and wrapping the thread..Let the ''pretty'' stuff come later.imo

Just be prepared to make a mess!!
This is my temporary bench now (in the process of moving)....This is when its cleaned. hammer

Good luck, and hit me up if I can help in anyway..Love talking rod building!!
