I have fished hard all my life but i have gotten into a rut. I try new stuff on occasion but i always go back to the old faithfuls to fast. Carolina rig, Texas rigs spinnerbaits and traps to fast. It keeps me from learning new stuff. I wanna learn swim baits, alabama rigs, drop shot ect... Anybody else ever get in a rut with same baits and technics? Im 45 and i hope this old dog can learn new tricks

I've found myself in quite the opposite rut in the past. . . trying TOO many new techniques at once, and not taking time to perfect any of them.

Here's hopin you are able to iron out some new tactics in 2012 cheers

Best advice I can give you is to leave most of your tackle at home, especially your 'go to" tackle. This has worked for me well over the years, I'm 49 now. Decide which technique you want to learn and apply it to the lake and conditions. Don't get frustrated and give it up, hence my reasoning for leaving all of your "go to" tackle at home. Stick to it for the day and learn. Sure, you might not catch as many fish on that trip as you would have with your confidence tackle but it's the best way to make yourself give the new technique a legitimate chance to work for you.

I told myself the same thing at the start of last year. I tried to use jigs, swim baits and crank baits all last year. I caught a lot more quality fish. I also told myself I would not try and fish the same spots.

Leavin the "go to" lures at home is a great idea

Parker and most of the pros will tell you the same thing, leave your normal everyday know I can catch em on this baits home, and work the ones you want to learn.
Over the years its been a set idea for me when I want to try something new, to just put my worm rods and spinnerbaits away, and throw something new. Seems to work out pretty good for me, hope it does for you

How do you leave your confidence stuff at home if you get so few days to get away and fish that every hour on the lake is so important? I wish I could fish enough to be able to have a "training" day on the lake. If I could, I would spend more time with electronics and figuring out how to use what I have better and how to find deep structure and deep fish and how to better read the twists and turns of creek channels when all you have is your sonar...........
