Looking to find ways to save a little money and have read a lot about using some cheaper line for backing. Here is my question, wha the best line to use for backing? and what knot do you use where you feel comfortable doing it. I have always just spooled up with whatever I am using and do you do the same with braid?

i only use backing on braid i use 15-20lb big game with 65lb power pro and i use a double uni to join the two.i do this to prevent the braid from slipping on the spool.

I use suffix performance braid for backing, using a Nail knot for attachment. Remember, the attachment knot does not leave your spool on your longest cast/pitch. I just want enough FC on my spool for my longest Pitch + enough for reties. I only put on 107' of FC for my Pitching. I want the Suffix braid for backing because it has no memory and is smooth, for a braid. Hope this helps.

Coach, I use backing on braid and flouro to stretch my dollar. It really doesnt matter what you use (mono, some line you tried and didnt care for but still have laying around, etc...), but it does help a little for the diameter of lines to be similar. I use a uni to uni not to attach them just because it's a quick knot to tie.

I just pick up those cheap spools of Mono at wal-mart.. spool up about 1/2 way.. run a piece of electrical tape over that, then spool with my fishing line of choice.
also, my backing fill level depends on the line I plan on fishing, meaning.. if the diameter line I plan on fishing is that of say 20-25lb flouro, and I intend on making LONG casts, I will need LESS backing.. make sense?

I use backing on fluor and braid. I just use overhand knot because I never plan on getting that far anyway

So if Im reading that right you dont tie a knot you just use the electrical tape correct? Interesting might have to try that out if Im understanding that right.

Bull,
I think i know what he is talking about, he doesn't tape them together but puts a strip of tape and the spools his main line to help prevent the backing from backlashing....i think that is what is saying.

I should clarify, I dont tie line to line. I DO however, secure the line that will hopefully get tugged on to the backfilled spool, with a knot. Im rather terrible at describing things of this nature. Im not much of a technical writer.. more of a story teller I suppose.

Ok I got ya now! I use backing to but I usually tie a knot to combine the two lines together. This way sounds a lil easier though!

Like RoF says I use the cheapest stuff on the shelf for backing and a double uni knot to join em.
