So far this is nothing but a broad concept. But here's the deal; oftentimes I find myself laboring under the impresssion that the flies I am tying need to be "beautiful" or appeal to some sense of aesthetic. Ideas of "ugly" vs. "attractive" play into the thought process.

But what if someone decided to tie the ugliest fly that they could? What if they strove to make it gawdawfull-looking? How might the final authority, the fishes, judge this fugly piece of work?

Talk amongst yourselves...

I talked amongst myself, and we decided that this is a great idea for a contest.

I've been tying for about 2 1/2 years and my flies are still ugly! I would have submited photos but why do that when I know my flies would take top honors in the contest.

Therefore, I am claiming the title for myself. Sorry guys & gals.

HA HA.

I am tempted to submit my very first fly from some 15+ years ago, which I kept under the advisement of a real pro. Spinning hair looked cool. So I had to try it. However, to submit such a thing would have to be cheating on some level, it resembling what would be left of a starving rat that that ate fly tying tread that in turn somehow exploded.

However, if butt-ugly is what the master wants, I'm sure I can spin a couple up! I'm in. cool

i remember one of my first dry flies i tied for colorado. it looked like one of these white puffy seeds that fall from the trees. it took forever for the fly to finally fall down to the water. when it hit the water, it never even made a ripple. but the brook trout loved it, and from there i was hooked.
we can call this contest the fast and ugly tying contest. thats the way keebranch and i tie em.
