Extensive electrofishing or possibly playing with their genetics
Thank you for your idea. The government has created a system that is called electronic fence in order to prevent Asian Carp enter great lake in Michigan. So far, this project has costed over 20 millions dollar, but the result is not what they are expected. They (fishermen) have found the existence of Asian Carp in great lake....
Need some chef to figure out how to make them taste good and turn them into a food resource.
This is such a good idea. However, Americans seem do not interesting to this fish very much because they are too bonny. What I'm researching is finding a good market for this fish at some other countries such as Africa, Middle East, or Asia.
Americans eat a lot of packaged fish that they would likely be surprised to learn what type of fish they were actually eating. Frozen fish sticks and fish patties come to mind.
Not saying that this is practical, just a thought.

The government should allow people to fish them for free...imagine how many folks would buy gear just to catch them and they get to keep as many as they want, no bag limit. There should be prizes for anglers who catch the most asian carp and snakeheads.

Yea, they just swim around like a whale shark and filter feed. That's what's so bad about about silver carp. Their ridiculous numbers eat the bottom of the food chain, cutting out all of the other predators. I could see ppl snagging these or trolling a net or something.

I've heard that silver carp are quite tasty; not sure about bigheads. Anyway, buffalo are currently commercially fished and used, as Curt has mentioned, as stock for fish sticks, etc. They are also considered to be rather boney. I'm sure some scaled down version of trawler or purse-seine would be effective, but the scale of the market would need to be huge in order to control their populations.
Two words, Cat Food! Start a cat food company and harvest the fish with nets, throwing back any other species that you catch. I had considered starting a business a while back...

thats funny you say that, i was thinking the same thing! there are alot of uses for these fish in the food market, but it doesnt need to be human food... there are alof of companies that use fish for animal feed already.
Catch them, freeze them, and sell them in the winter to catfishermen that have a hard time catching shad. I would imagine they are pretty oily. I'd give them a shot

This fish is extensively eaten in China where they net fish them as a food resource. I actually watched a fishing show Robson Green World Tour China episode this week where they were harvesting by the tens of thousands of tons frequently as a delicacy for the region.
The problem is you'll never be able to control them like you could Snakehead because carp simply lay too many eggs. Even if you somehow managed to kill the majority of the adults all it takes is a pair or few pairs and you have 50k plus eggs again that renew the species. Geneticly altering the fish with some sort of terminal disease that they can transfer to other Big Head Carp seems like the most logical way and that would take several years before you'd see any real declines. Widespread netting for them is probably the best bet for the initial strike then follow up with some Big Head specific fish toxin or engineered disease.
My preferred solution would be to release some massive Asian catfish species that would potentially start eating them and just add another beast sportfish for us
