I am still pretty new to fishing and have another question.
A couple of days ago a friend and I went to Rollover Pass. This was my friend's first time to fish, my 9th. We are both 17. We got there about 7:30 pm and it was quickly dark, real dark. By 8:30 we were the only people on the bay side.
There was a man on the gulf side that had a generator and a pretty tall light and he caught a few fish. We did not catch anything. My friend was not real comfortable in the dark at a place that he was not familiar with so we only stayed about 2 hours.
My question is, My grandpa has a generator 3500 watts and he has 3 or 4 sets of work lights. The lights are on stands about 3-4 foot tall and each has 2 1000 lamps. I do not think that they are as bright as the one that the man had the other night.
Would a set of these lights shining down into the water be of any use in catching any fish at night? If so where should they be pointed and would we fish in the middle of the bright spot?
Thanks for any info anyone might be able to provide.
Thanks, Jason

Hello Jason,
I was night fishing many time at ROLLOVER PASS .I have one HONDA 2000 watt generator and one stage light with 1000 watt halogen bulb. You set the light shining down into the water between middle of the chanel and bank. You can fish in the middle of the bright spot, but the bigest fish are between light and shadow. If the water don't move is possible to don't catch fish,so you must look for the tide at ROLLOVER PASS,because the moving water bring bait, and the small bait bring the big fish to. If you look to catch flounder you set the spot light close with the bank ,not in the middle of chanel like for specks.
Good luck!!!
Jean

Jason,
Fishing with lights is a popular way to fish up and down the coast. I have not fished a generator, but have fished dock lights from the boat. Just like all other fishing, sometimes it's good, sometimes it's not.

The best place to get the good lights is cheaplights.com. You need to use spot lights instead of flood lights.

The best place to get the good lights is cheaplights.com. You need to use spot lights instead of flood lights. Correct... Jason, you want narrow beam lights instead of wide beam... Look at '121-FISHPACK-2C' for the setup: http://www.cheaplights.com/cart/page22.htmlLook at '148-FFP-L' for the bulbs.. (bottom item on this page): http://www.cheaplights.com/cart/page49.htmlYou want PAR 64...

Thanks for all of the replies and info. Unfortunately I can not justify spending close to $240.00 for lights at this time. That is why I was asking if the work lights that my grandpa has would work or be any help.
Maybe this summer when school is out I can think about a set of these.
Thanks everyone, Jason.

Well maybe I could get a set. I was looking at the price for a dual set and 2 bulbs. Then I noticed in the foto the man had a single unit. Only $115.53 if I go pick it up.
Thanks everyone, Jason

Jason, The man in the Photo is my friend BILL BATSON from Washington state ,owner of www.batsonenterprises.com(world premier supplier of fishing rod building),fishing with jig at ROLLOVER PASS. Uploaded with ImageShack.usWith one single unit(like mine)1000 watt P 64 bulb, you can catch many nice fish like you catch with 2-4 unit(if you know to fish). Regards, Jean Scurtu

Lights will definitely help you out. My family has underwater lights and we demolish the fish at night. Our neighbors have a floodlight type system that they use and they do well also. My thoughts are why not take out your Grandpa's lights and generators and see if you can catch fish before going out and spending a lot of money on new ones. That way you don't have to spend money and might catch some fish. It's worth a shot.

Welcome to TFF, Jason. Pay attention to Jean Scurtu and what the rest of the guys said. Jean knows rollover pass as well as anyone.
I've been trying to get down there to fish with ( learn more from) Jean for 2 years now...and maybe I can finally come down before they close the pass for good this year.
To give you an idea how well lights Can sometimes work...I was fishing on the Cameron, LA jetty pier one evening when the lights came on. About an hour later, there were literally thousands of specks all around the pier, feeding on bait fish which the lights brought in. It was an incredible sight ! Of course it's not always like that...but it helps to see it happen once or twice.

I was catching at ROLLOVER PASS many specks, red fish, flounder using HONDA EU 2000 WATT generator and just one stage light with one 1000 watt halogen bulb. You don't need 2 stage light and 2 bulb 1000watt!!!!,BUT IS JUST MY OPINION.....
