Got a letter from Ford today offering their ESP. My warranty expired Nov. '10.

I have an '05 Supercrew with 32k miles. Never had a problem with it and I assume they'll probably want $1500-2000 for a three year plan. I'll have to call them to find out. I plan on keeping this truck until one of us drops dead.

So do you think I should bite on this plan now or wait a couple more years to buy their scheme? Will the price go up significantly if I put it off?

Any good info would be greatly appreciated!

When I bought the truck Ford's warranty was 3 years 36k miles. Dealer gave me the 5 year 60k warranty for free. I'm nowhere near 60k miles, but like I say, the thing expired in '10.

Man, if they offer me another 5 yrs, $200 deductible for $1250 I'll jump all over it!

On buffaloman's warranty, it's so cheap because the first 3 years/ 36k are covered by the manufacturer (assuming he bought the warranty when he bought the truck and that's not an additional 5 years/ 100k). He basically paid for the last 2 years and 64k miles. Still not a bad price, but it's not at all the same situation as you're talking about.

My in-laws always buy the extended service plans, and I don't think they've ever used one once.

Looking at it from your perspective, it's a small sample size. But if the dealer didn't make money on those in the grand scheme of everyone who buys one, they wouldn't sell them. So mathematically, you're more likely to lose money than come out ahead.

I bought my 2004 silverado in 2008 with 42k miles on it and just turned 109k a week ago. I've only had one issue with it and Chevy had already put a recall out for it so I got it fixed for free. I wouldn't drop $1500 or more if I didn't think there was a good chance of something going wrong. Of course, that's why I drive a Chevy! smile

As a general rule for consumer goods, buying extended warranties is a bad idea, and vehicles are not an exception. They can save your butt sometimes, but in the long run you'll typically spend more buying warranties than you ever would have if you'd just paid for the repairs yourself.

These things are big money makers for the people that sell them. Talk to a financial adviser and they will always advise against them. My thinking on them is if I think I am going to need an extended warranty then why am I buying the product.

Extended warranty's on todays vehicles can at times save you a fortune, just an fyi 1500.00 sounds steep until you have a problem with your abs brakes are a trans problem, and you dont have any warranty and they hit you with 2500.00-3500.00 for the repair. Are if its a diesel and they hit you with the egr cooler and head gasket repair.it really depends on the vehicle you purchased, like i said a ford diesel i would definately buy the extended warranty for it due to the problems they have had.

Stan's right, sometimes they can save your wallet bigtime. My only point was that in the grand scheme of the whole math equation, the seller makes money on them. However, with a sample size of 1, the normalized equations don't always apply. It really depends on how strong your stomach is for risk and how good you are at car repairs. It is nice peace of mind, but it's peace of mind that you pay fairly handsomely for.

Thanks for the replies. I'm leaning towards not getting the thing considering the low miles I put on the truck and seldom haul more than a few hundred lbs. of anything. Only thing I ever tow is 1 jet ski. I'm good about all the routine maintenance so it's hard to see handing over $1500 or more "just in case".

Main reason I asked is that this offer was from my dealer, not some third party. Still can't see doing it now, maybe down the line.

I used to never buy extended warranties, then heard some stories from friends where it saved them a couple grand. Bottom-line is, it's a roll of the dice. Even with good maintenance, there's always a defect rate in all vehicles and you might get the unlucky vehicle.

Try to negotiate down the $1500, if not shop around on the internet. I know that for Honda, the local dealer wanted $1300 but I got the same exact manufacturer's warranty from a dealer in Maine for $800. Didn't even have to buy the vehicle from that dealer, just the warranty!

I used to love extended warranties because I got 15% of the price and the dealer go 35%. We pushed them hard and rarely had anyone who needed them.

Read the fine print !!!!
Example: My father-in-law had a $1500 extended warranty on his Cadillac. The A/C compressor shelled and contaminated the entire system. The warranty company would only pay for the compressor and R&R labor. No EVAC and Recharge, no oil, no refridgerant, no orfice tube or labor, no dryer or labor, no condensor or labor and no flush. It was roughly a $1800 job that the warranty company would only cover $500 of it. Lucky for him that we're related.

I have an 2004 F150 Screw 5.4. Bought the ESP FROM FORD. At 57k, needed new cylinder heads and a transmission to get rid of a ticking tapping noise under the hood and a clunk from start in the tranny. $8k worth of work done. Plus, I have had 3 window regulators and a sliding back window motor replaced ($350 each). My cost- $50 deductible.

Buy the warranty. If for nothing else, while you make payments, you have peace of mind. You never know what your vehicle is gonna do, but when it does, you can bet the dealership will have little sympathy without a warranty.

I bought a 2005 trailblazer with 53K on it went ahead and got the extended warranty up to 100K. The 4wd system had to be replaced at 99K, its a catch 22 kind of deal, I look at as if I buy it and dont need it its better than not buying it and needing it later.

This is my 400th post...Small steps
