1" irrigation poly pipe. You can get it rather inexpensive. once built I am using 60 grit sandpaper and roughing up the surface of the pipe so that algae grows quicker. I am also adding a mesh bag full of purina game fish chow to attract the baitfish before I drop them in. These should be loaded in less than a couple of weeks.

What are the white things? Are they zip ties?

yeah the white are zip ties, I used those to secure to bucket but I also used a coated exterior deck screw to keep them indexed so that I wouldn't be fighting them while or after pouring concrete. I elected to keep the zip tie ends seeing that baitfish may like congregating around those. I know they are simple but I believe they should be extremely effective!

Looks good. Quick question, is the tubing spaced too far apart for crappie? I'm looking to build my own crappie nests in the next month and have been contemplating a few things.

Comes in rolls, you have to straighten it or leave as is.

I've started stockpiling supplies and on Saturday will begin building my own crappie nests. Look for a thread to come out of it but here is what I have so far. 100 ft of 1 in irrigation pipe, 28 bucks at lowes 320 lbs of quikrete Also have other buckets, boxes, and old x-mas tree stands that will hold cement. Like I said more pics coming in the thread I start on Saturday

looks like you have the stuff. make sure you get deck screws or some kind of coated screw that you can use to index the pipe so that you don't have to fight with it while pouring concrete. I sank 5 of these today at 4am on Lake Fork and man they worked like clock work. Make sure you also get 60 grit sandpaper and rough up the pipe after it in concrete. I bought chum bags and filled them with purina game fish chow but you could use cattle cubes as well. It will draw the minnows and then the big mamas come in after them.

I ended up making one of these at my house but didn't have room in the truck to bring it. Sanded it already and put some posts in the middle to attach bamboo to when I'm done. I had already used screws to hold everything in place and it looks great! I picked up a bunch of bamboo and sunk these today as well.

Dumb question? Is it legal to sink crappie condos?

Boy, Im gonna feel dumb for asking this but is there any chance the bamboo might actually survive and root in and cause a weed problem later on. Probably not but lots of lakes accept runnoff from a large # of acres as a watershed and folks fertilizing their lawns times bunches of homeowners makes for a pretty nutrient rich water source. I'm probably wrong. I'm good at being wrong thats why I've gottten good at asking stupid questions. Does it work for you and have you ever had it move off target root and start growing?

I would think not since it is set in concrete.

So after nearly sinking our paddle boat due to the weight of all the concrete, I'm going to try something new this weekend. I am going to use cinder blocks and pour concrete into the open spaces in them and then put the bamboo there. Anyone tried this? I don't see why it would work and will save concrete and weight a bit less.

If anyone is interested call me on my cell 903 850 8400. Soon as it gets daylight I be outside building more huts. Thanks,

Bamboo will not grow in water, And the bamboo it self is cut so there is no roots to take holt and grow. To grow bamboo you have to plant the root it self in a well drained area then stand back and watch it grow.

Yeah I did the 5 gallon bucket deal for a little while - they were huge and a pain in the a$$ to do by myself. I liked the cinder blocks alot better. You can use less stalks but they still look good, and I can sling them cinder blocks around a lot better. Yep, just how I did it. Less concrete and easier to handle.

I'm With Ya on the amount of Boo...
IMO, when it is thick, you can't fish down IN the structure. Can only fish around the edges. When conditions are good, you can possibly draw a few out of the structures. But when they are holding tight, you haft to shake it right in there face to have a chance. Also if you can get your jig down in it, you cant get it out, without hanging up and shaking the structure. We have customized our Boo Structure a couple of times in the past 2 years, and think we have the ticket now. They are producing several crappie. We have also reduced the height of structure to about 5'. So you can get 2-3 pieces per stalk, which is good.
Just an old man's opinion.

keith Good info. I didn't make mine too thick either. They spread out and looked great in the water so I'm excited to see what comes from them in the spring.
