My wife has a Shimano Curado E5 for cranking and she absloutely loves it. I am thinking of getting a Curado G5 for myself. I am wondering what are the differences, if any, between the latest version of the Shimano Curado vs. previous models. Anyone using the newest version and what is your impression thus far? Thanks

The new G Curado is an aluminum framed Caenan, while the "new" E Chronarch is an repainted E series Curado for $20 more than the Curado E retailed for. If you do a search on the new G Curado, you'll see a lot of negative comments on what Shimano did to cheapen the Curado and Chronarch line of reels. The consensus seems to be that the G might be a decent reel, but is not up to par with the E series Curados like your wife has and the E Chronarch is half the reel the D Chronarch was. Look around, you can still find some great deals on the E series Curados. You ought to be able to find some in the $100-$120 range with a little shopping.

G5 definately feels cheaper although I can´t quite say why. I used to laugh when I read comments like this about feeling cheaper but now i know what they mean. As far as performance, it casts better than my E5 and feels smoother on retrieve. Not sire long term though.

All the hooplah. They just put the Curado back closer in quality to the old 200B. Most of the specs are the same except it is a super free model. The old 200B sold for $119.00 10 years ago and at $129.00 this G series may prove to be as reliable and economical as the name Curado has brought now for 19 years. (What other reel out there has a record that long?)
They were turning out a reel that had waaaay more features and quality appointments than they were getting paid for in relation to the competition and have just put it back to where it was when it was one of the greatest reel buys on the market. That it is now. The other bargain is the Chronarch E. There is much more than 20 bucks worth of extras on this reel and at $199 is still a heck of a price for all the quality of that reel.

The spool and handle are double anodized on the Chronarch, the dragstar is plastic on the Chronarch 200E vs. metal on the Curado 200E, and the drag on the Chronarch 200E is "dartanium II" vs the Curado's Dartanium (they spec the same).
Other than the paint job, that's what different about the 2 reels in the 200 size.
For the 50's the chronarch has the power knobs like the 200 size reels whereas the Curado 50 has standard. Also of note, the dragstar is plastic on both reels.

I don't understand why people praise the old E Citica but are scared to buy the new Curado. I would be hard pressed to find a reel with as much engineering and quality as a Curado in it's price range. The tolerances of these reels is, and will remain to be outstanding for years if it is maintained properly. I don't understand why people are complaining about bearing count either. Put a bearing under each handle knob and side by side I bet you couldn't tell the difference between these and the E series.
