I dont own a pair of waders. never put a pair on. wouldnt know the difference between a pair of waders and a black trash bag. Looking for advise from the kayak pros on the forum. I am going on a fishing trip with Shane Davies this weekend for my bday and super pumped!....but need waders. I would prefer something that I could layer under.

Go to Academy, you can find some decent ones there for under $100. Try a few on and see which is more comfortable.

I picked up the cheap rubber boot-foot waders from academy when they were $20. I've used them twice and have been pleased with them. The only thing I don't like is the boots are a little heavy, making it somewhat awkward turning sidesaddle and back, but you may not want your feet dangling in the water when it's 35 degrees out anyway.

I picked up some new 3mm waders at Cabela's last week for $115 out the door. You can layer under them.

This time of year you will want Neoprene. 3.5 mill will give you good insulation and good maneuverability. You will also want a good pair of warm socks. Cabela's had Neoprene waders on sale the other day for 40 bucks, regularly 60 bucks. They also have an excellent selection of socks. Suggest you try them on with the socks before you buy. I prefer stocking foot waders because I have a Mirage pedal drive in my kayak, and stocking foot is more flexible. But stocking foot sometimes gets rocks in the boots where as the boot type waders generally do not. Neoprene waders will float you like a cork if you go in and even if you have cold water in them they will keep you warm enough to survive.
I also have a pair of breathable waders. These are nice when the weather is milder. You can make them work in colder weather by adding extra layers of insulation but this is less than ideal. You can sometimes find them for less than 100 bucks but you will probably want the features that will run the price up from there a little.
I have the tried the cheap plastic waders and they don't even last through 1 trip. One long stride and the crotch is gone.
In summer when it is warm, I generally don't wear waders.

academy is a nice source IMO. u could wait for a sale or pay $60-80 now. look for one with a belt & straps! also suggest you use them asap & take em back right away if they leak at all. if they are leaking a little now it will only get worse with time. i use mine from middle of fall -early spring

i like breathable w/ neoprene bootys over ones with rubber boots. i wear crocs or aqua socks over them if the water is really chilly (45* or below)

I prefer to wear breathable waders year round and layer appropriately depending on that day's weather. I have 3.5mil neoprene's, but I use them as backups if I'm fishing a buddy who needs to borrow a pair. Either way you go, get stocking foot over boot foot waders.

Academy is probably the cheapest, but I managed to score a nice pair from Bass Pro for $50.

I went fishing Monday and didnt even use waders. When I do use them I use a pair of neoprene waders I got at academy. I know they were a lot less than $100.

Bought some at Cabelas for $35 in the bargin cave. Work just fine and if I get a full season out of them I'm happy. I think they run $75 new and have the boots built in.

I prefer the breathable waders as well. Dick's usually has some on sale. If you get the kind that do not have the books built in, be sure to check with the manufacturer of the wading boots to see if you should get them in your shoe size or something larger - some manufacturers build in extra room into the size to accomodate the waders; some do not.

hey sam, i've been wearing the cheapo hip waders when i float up the creek. allows me to get in the kayak fine and keeps paddle drip off me. i also have the breathable stocking foot waders which are great. i wear sweats underneath and have been fine. fished in colorado cold water in summertime no problems. the good thing about breathable waders you can use them year round.

These are what I wear. Maybe alittle too much but I have yet to get cold with just long johns under them. So far this year a long sleeve shirt with a tee shirt underneath and the life jacket have been enough.

Academy 34.00 hip boots and Frog Tog pants works for me. Better mobility than chest waders.

I have both chest and hip, would suggest the hip, more comfortable and work just fine.

Chest is nice if weather is cold

my BIL has those. they are very warm. he says the boots rub his heels and give him blisters. in the spring & fall he cant wear them very long cause he says they are too warm with just shorts underneath. he finally bought the breathable with neoprene booties. said he like them better for spring and fall and they arn't as heavy.

I agree with the breathable waders. They are more versatile; they can be worn on the coldest days (just layer up underneath) and can be used on the milder days without turning your lower body into a sauna. Plus they are MUCH less restrictive on your body, which is a good thing after you've been in them five or six hours.

I use the mid-price ($80) Magellan breathable waders with attached neoprene socks. I also use a pair of cheap canvas boots over them (two sizes bigger than your regular shoe size). When those boots wear out, I'm gonna hit the bargain basement stores for a good but cheap pair of hiking boots, again, two sizes big.

RBR gave you the best advise, though. A quality pair of winter socks. My feet are always the first thing to get cold. Good socks help immensely, especially if you plan to do some wade fishing.

i assume you guys are wearing waders in the kayaks. If you flip your kayaks how easy is it to get back on top of your rides.

thank u guys. I ended up getting the 3 fork cabelas waders insulated. I went on a trip with Yota and Brod yesterday and they worked great. I did get alittle cold in the morning but I dont blame the waders. Being new to this I wore jeans under my waders but I'm learning. Thanks for all the help fellas.
