Any of u guys ever install a keel guard??? The directions look pretty easy but any helpful tips would be great... They only give u a little tube of primer.. should I do just the edges and .the middle or what..

Thanks guys

I recently installed as Hambys Light keel guard. First off, read and follow the instructions carefully. It will tell you where to place the guard on the hull and how to prep the area. My only tip would be to hold the guard up to the hull and have someone mark the borders with a sharpie. That will give you a definite area to prep, so you don't waste your time and effort. The vial of prep supplied with my guard was indeed small, but there was plenty.

I was pretty scared when I did mine until I got going and then it was a snap.(or should I say Stick)

Clean it as best as you can.

I started by sticking the ceter part of the guard on the keel going down about two feet at a time and then worked it out to the sides. I continued that until it was all the way on.

Then went over it a few more times to ensure the stick.

Did mine myself took about 1hr from prep to cold beer!!! Not sure if I'd do it in the cold weather because you need it soft and workable.

Sorry sassyman, at least you saw when it rubbed out and hopefully it paid for itself for a year. I'm sure some are better than others.

The Hamby I hear is top of the line.

I beach on super soft stuff so mine is holding up OK on that...not sure on rougher beaches.

I did my own also it's not a big deal. Like it was said set it up to the boat mark it, clean the area really good. After it dries scuff the marked area till the paint is a little dull. Wipe the scuffed area clean, peel the center tape off the guard 1 1/2 to 2 feet at a time and carefully center it and stick it to your boat. Make sure it is far enough forward for proper protection when beaching. Some come with an instructional DVD. Good Luck

I'd wait till at least a 75 degree day. They're real easy though. I've done 3 so far. No biggie

Mark the outline with a pencel or marker and make sure you dont scuff outside of the marked area. Those scuff pads are pretty abrasive and you will see marks outside of the marked area if you get carried away with it and go outside the lines.
