I am seriously looking into getting a kayak for fishing. Our lakes here in Abilene would be good for a yak. What are somethings I need to look into before I go buy one. what are the pros and cons of getting one, limitations etc. All information would be greatly appreciated

Hey Mister Fish it's great to have you over here. I sold my bass boat and got a kayak a couple years ago. I started catching more and larger fish after about a month. Also you will not have the Bass Boat monthly payment, The gas bill, oil bill, insurance bill, maintenance bill, buying four batteries for the trolling motor,ETC..... The cons are that you will not be able to fly 60MPH to the other side of the lake to see if the fish are biting over there. The pro to that is that you fish a area more thoroughly. You will be able to get back in to new virgin water that a big bass boat only dreams about. Go read this it will help. http://texasfishingforum.com/forums/ubbt...ing#Post5913465

So much to consider, but the two main questions are 1. What's your height/weight? and 2. Where do plan on using it most often?
Some yaks just don't handle people over say 225 very well. Many do though. I know that lakes in westex often have much more wind than even around DFW, which means it gets ridiculous sometimes... Longer yaks with lower profiles are the way to go for that... They are much harder to maneuver in the creeks though...

I plan on mostly using it on the lakes around the Abilene area. The wind around here can get ridiculous sometimes.

Well, weight wise you're good to go with most boats... If you're looking at conventional paddle yaks then I'd say look at something longer than 13 feet. Tarpon 140, native manta ray 14, wilderness ride, ok prowlers... Something along those lines... There's also the new Jackson cuda. There are many windy days where I wish I had a hobie with a mirage drive too... They're awesome... Just not good for super shallow stuff...
Don't know if there's a paddle/outdoor shop out your way, but if so call them and see if they'll let you demo some... The more you paddle before you buy the better...
