Just curiosity, what if you finessed fished for catfish? Like not 4 lb test maybe, but like 10 or something. Just to enjoy the fight. What's your opinion on that?

I agree with Lga043, if I wanted to use light tackle would be trying for crappie or bluegill. You never know when one of those big 50lb + fish is going to hit.

I've done it before with a 6' light action spinning rod with 25 lb braid. Fighting the fish isn't the problem. It's the darn vicious strike that will test your gear. Even with the drag set on the lighter side, they hit so hard they will break rods if you're not careful. Lots of fun though!

I use lighter tackle when I fish for channel cats for the freezer.

i used to think 17 pound test was finessing! I hate to use under 30 now and prefer 40. ! Hate to miss the big one when he hits.I like 50 on the leader.
I've caught a few cats on UL's up to 10 pounds on 6lb test while crappie fishing . It's a blast ! but if you are targeting trophy cats I think you would get owned more times than naught.
I use 30lb mono. Most guys on here use 65+lb braid. I've got a ML Baitcasting rod with an old Ambassaduer 2500 spooled with 20lb braid that I use for sandbassing and whatnot. I've caught a couple mid 20's blues on it and while it was fun it's more fun to do it on my Pro Angler rods and not have to worry about losing a fish.
