Didn't even get a bite, but I did take the time to do some teaching. Took my 9-year-old son with me. Taught him the "Leave it better than you found it" philosophy. We ended up leaving with a grocery sack full of other people's trash. He also learned to cut some bait without cutting off his fingers. All in all, I'd say it was a successful day.

He's learning to appreciate just being outdoors and not sitting in front of the idiot box. He does love his video games, but the minute I suggested we go fishing he dropped everything and had shoes on before I could even finish my sentence.

I spent most of my years outdoors, and I want to make sure both my kids appreciate it the same way I do. My daughter is still a little young, and her attention span is about ten seconds, so I'll start in with her when she's a little older.

Oh, he can handle a fish, for sure. I just want to make sure he knows how to take care of the lakes that give us these fish. Today just wasn't the day. North wind all week and the city shut off bank access to the south side of the lake, so we were fishing with the wind at our back. No bueno. But...there's always next time.
