I like to let them dry out some, that way the sap isn't as bad when handling them. I always would cut like 3 wholes in the tree limbs, but is not neccessary. In time, with the needles falling off, they will thin out enough for the fish to get in there.

Ernest patty sinks his trees fresh....and from what I've heard he knows a few things about crappie! Some of the "experts" said to thin them out...not sure if it matters or not, but kieth Speer ties bottles to the top of his so they stand up-right...I stole his idea and they look great on SI! Also it gives you more water column for the fish to suspend in...just my opinion...

yall expend too much energy in trying to make them "fishie"... just tie a couple cinder blocks to the trunk and toss em in the lake!! thats it. dont overthink it. I used to think that letting them dry for a couple months was better.... it isnt any better than the day you throw them on the trailer to take em home.

I use a small hole saw bit, and put a hole in the trunk to tie rope to and then attach cinder blocks. Fresh trees sunk slower, and required more weight to get them down....

Lol ya my first expieriance the other day I only tied a half a cinder block to them, chunked them over board, rigger the next one only to turn around and see the first one "bobbing" lol! It takes a whole cinder block to sink one!

I had a private pond back in my home town that I put in xmas trees every year for twenty year and did it both ways.

The fish don't care.
