I'm about to take a 10 day river trip through the lower canyons of the rip grande. I was wondering whether there was any kind of fly fishing there or if any oft had any recommendations. Thanks!

The canyons just below Bend Bend park are called the Lower Canyons. Not sure if those are the ones he's referring to, but they are about 7 day minimum float, so, it sounds like that section of the river.

Finding fishing information on that part of the river may be difficult to find. Not that many people have been there. The closest I ever got to them was floating Boquillas when I was in college.

I'd take a rod with me, there should be some bass and other warmwater fish in there.

Good luck, it should be a cool trip.

I would recommend the Sig Sauer.

I'd recommend the Ruger Mini-14 fly rod myself...

I'd certainly find out more about the political situation, how the cartel scene is down that way.

Anyone who is considering a trip on the Rio Grande of Texas should read "The Tecate Journals" by Keith Bowden prior to leaving. You need to know what you're getting in to.

Crispy -

I have made that trip many times and would be more than happy to give you some detailed information on the fishing, water levels, rapids, etc. My dad and his friends started floating the lower canyons in college and passed the tradition down to us. Shout if I can help.

I've been down that section of river a few times but never fished it. I do know there's gar in there, and I'd have to imagine there are plenty of buffalo and carp, too.

It doesn't really strike me as the fishiest water around, though, and certainly not on the fly - but maybe I'm just a pessimist smile

If you're talking about the Rio Grande in Texas, I spent a bunch of time pulling a sein through the water at Big Bend State Park, and every time we'd pull the net it was full of hellgrammites (sp?). A pattern that mimmics them might be good.
