Im right at 100,000 miles so i got some maintance work done on the truck and the shop said my tranny fluid looks like chit. I told them not to mess with it because i wasnt sure how my vehical would react to the "clean" fluid. they ensured me everything would be fine and it was a MUST need, so i gave them the green light.... now im pissed! tranny slips BAD in freezing temps and act as if it doesnt know when to shift and skips gears.. should i do my homework on some good clean additives or start saving on a new transmition?

seals are hard. the old fluid was thick enough to compensate for it. find some good trans additive to put in it for now.

ps.. dont drive it until you put additive in it or you are gonna burn up the clutches.

Start saving.

I would say it aint all the shops fault though. It is a general rule to not change the fluid on a neglected transmition as it will likely go out, but you neglected it in the first place...

Some people call it neglect, but i quit changing my trans fluid years ago. I watched people wait and change fluid with high mileage and several went out within a week. My 1996 chevy had 333,000 miles on it , pulling bassboat and trailers weekly, and never had the trans fluid touched and never had a problem. My current 2005 has 180,000 miles and never changed the fluid, with lots of towing. You probably wouldn't have had a problem if you would have just left it alone.

Sounds like he had a high pressure salesman and he caved in to him. It's a tough place to be. I'm sure he feels bad enough without us reminding him.

Good luck with the transmission.

I had a similar situation back in 1979 changed the filter on a high mileage pickup and the tranny started messing up. I went to see a friend of mine in the transmission business, I ask him what I could pour in it, he said some metal shavings and hope it goes to the right place. I pulled it in his shop to be rebuilt.
