Got my first rod for Christmas and was wondering if the four weight will be good for me. I do a lot of sand bass and crappie fishing. Also a little large mouth every now again but I want to get into a little trout fishing. Will this rod be good or should I trade it in for a 5 weight? I have asked a few on pm so please don't take offense to this just want some ideas.

Thanks
Drew

It ought to be fine. You could always over line it with a five weight line. Enjoy smile

For whites, you're probably gonna throw a sinking line or a sink tip and want something with a little power to lift the line out of the water. Overlining with a sinking line wouldn't be my first choice. If you can get credit, I'd vote trading for a 5wt as an all around rod for white bass and medium LM bass flies, and it's a great weight for trout too.

That's not to say the 4wt couldn't work--it's sort of in the middle for freshwater and can still throw a sinking line quite well. What's model is your 4wt? Somebody here is most likely familiar with it.

It's more than likely heavy enough to carry a 5 weight line as most mass produced four weights are actually 5 weights, which is why most folks over-line them with a 5 line anyway. I think the 4 is the most versatile weight rod for freshwater applications; brim, bass, crappie, sand bass, yellow bass, etc. The things that will ultimately make you go to a heavier rod are WIND and SALAD. as the 4 does not have a lot of muscle to bust thru the wind nor to horse a fish out of cover; otherwise its a fine weight for a rod-p-

You should be fine with the 4wt. I fish with it alot for bass, trout, perch...etc.

I'm with those recommending you stay with the four, and as time goes on you can always get a six or seven for LMB 8'6" is a good length for making mends on moving water.
