Look at the Ruger 10/22, starts at 179 new and can be HIGHLY customized.

The model 60 and 10/22 are both awesome guns. The 10/22 is the most customizable .22 on the planet. The model 60 is a good shooter if you want to keep it stock and go a little cheaper. I haven't seen the 10/22 for less than $190 new recently and the model 60 will run you about $140-$150 new if I'm remembering correctly.

We looked at that one, the Remington 597 w/scope and the Ruger10/22.
We went with the 10/22 for my son because of the customizing aspect. For a shooter you want to keep stock you cant go wrong with the Model 60.

Lots of choices to go with in the range you are looking at. Do some research on the models you want, we found out the Remington 597 jams quite often, so we ruled it out for my son.
Ruger 10/22 highly customizable.So thats is what we went with
