What would be advantages/disadvantages to getting a yak or a one man pontoon? I'm looking to get one just not sure which one...

I've had both. If u want to go any distance get a yak. I hated the pontoon. In the yr I had it I used it maybe 5 times. I sold it for a huge loss and will never own one again. They r slow, can't carry very much and have to worry bout not puncturing the bladders. Only good thing is they can be broke down and not take up alot of space.

i would think the pontoon, only for downstream river trips with a pickup

didn't realize they did not hold much

Well, I have to say both.
They both have their advantages and disadvantages.
Small lakes and ponds I prefer my toon.
Larger lakes, rivers, and long distances (as mentioned) I prefer my yak. I have both if you want to meet up and test drive send me a PM.

makes sense... The main reason I was getting more serious was that Cabela's has a nice toon in the Bargain Cave and it's marked down to a really enticing price. I've been wanting a kayak for a while, then when I saw the toon I started questioning holding out for a kayak. I think I'll just wait.
Thanks guys!

I've had both, and I too would prefer the kayak if I was only going to have one. A good pontoon with a trolling motor would be nice.

A little trolling motor would be awesome. I actually looked into getting an additional tube that a trolling motor could attach to for my tube. The problem is, as soon as you add any sort of motor you have to register it. The main reason I want to get a toon or a yak is so I don't have to worry about registration, etc. So, I think I'll just save for a decent yak...
Thanks for all the input guys!
Ryan

Have tube, toon, and Kayak

Preffer kayak by far, can get around easier but you can also slow down if needed. But does require something to haul it unless you get a inflatable kayak. Have not seen any good reviews on these.

Plus with kayak can get away from snakes etc. easier, main problem with tube to slow.

But fishing with any of these will get you out on the water and off the bank.

I suspect you're going to get more yak response here. Ask the same question over on the Tube forum and the tide will probably flow the other way.

I've never tried a toon, but wanted one for the longest time. Then I discovered kayaking and pool noodles--transportation issue solved. I hauled my kayak around the metroplex atop my Accord for a long time before getting a truck.

+1 my corolla gets me and my yak to the lake and back, no problem. Storage may be the only issue, but my mom has a canoe suspended from the vaulted ceiling in her living room, so just be creative.

Someone mentioned inflatables... my Stearns inflatable kayak is good for fishing albeit slow. I'd only want a toon if it had a trolling motor as I imagine the inflatable is still much easier to paddle. With the inflatable I can chase hybrids around LL for a few hours and although being exhausted it is doable. With a toon I think it would just be too slow to keep up with schooling fish (minus a motor) and too tippy with the higher center of gravity to be on open water.

I built a kayak/canoe hybrid that will fit in my trunk and carry 3 people. It isn't an open water boat by any means though but I can paddle it > 6mph for short bursts and cruise at 4 mph which means I can skirt a lot of shore to get to where I want to be.

Tony,

You mind giving the type/model of inflatable Stearns kayak you have?

Im still looking for a good inflatable angling kayak.
Storage space is the biggest issue for me.

Hi AdanV,

It is an IK-116. Had it for 11 years, bought as a demo from REI. Still use it although I think this model is discontinued now.

http://www.paddling.net/Reviews/showReviews.html?prod=764

It blows up in 5 minutes and I can carry it in one hand and all of my fishing gear in the other for ~100 yards w/o too much effort. I can usually only paddle 2 or 3 miles in it before I'm very tired as it is rather slow with no glide, but it is great if you don't need to travel far. Pretty tough boat as I've had few problems with leaks through the years.

Actually if I had it to do over again maybe I'd get the tandem model as the water line would be longer so it would be faster. Then I'd be tempted to get it registered and use a small trolling motor and trolling motor battery.

My my, just checked on ebay. What a bargain $240 for the tandem model. I am resisting temptation right now LOL.
