I chose the Pescador because it had a seat and it weighed less.
The ocean Kayak could carry more weight but it depends on what you want from your kayak.

I only ask because i saw the sand heritage angler ksyak at the academys in mesquite buy don't see it online, or see any reviews on it. It had a seat with 2 flush holders in rear and a Scotty up front...the front hatch had 2 twist type locks on it (italso was flush with the bow) know for sure I don't want a scrambler

The Pescador is a sweet ride for the price. I don't regret buying mine one bit.

the heritage redfish is a great kayak. I have one as my second kayak and its a great boat. Stable, fairly fast, handle rough water well, handles my 275lbs butt pretty well, and has lots of storage space for gear. Plus the layout of the cockpit is nice and flat. The plastic on the redfish is super thick as well.

The pescadors are nice too but I never owned one so I cant comment.

I think the Heritage kayak at Academy is the same layout but I'm sure that there are some differences.

It looks very similar to a Redfish 12.
It's a nice boat for the money.
Just wish it had a full seat.

I own a Pescador 12 and have had the Redfish 10. The plastic on the Redfish cracked in front of the seating area by (and into) the scupper holes. Now I'm not that big but I would notice an oil can effect when I sat down thus causing the cracks. Now the Pescador is essentially a Tarpon 120, using the same molds of the old style Tarpon with a few minor modifications. I can highly recommend the Pescador, good speed vs stability, good tracking, dry ride (water goes to the footwells like it should, and good price

I own two perception Sport Pescador's one is for me and one for the wife.

As you know already the Pescador is the excat same kayak as the 2008 Tarpon 120.

Before personaly owning the Pescador's my wife and I traveled 2 hours to the closest Academy to pick up two Pescador's when we arrived I quickly noticed the Heritage Angler 12' and that it had the extra flush mount rod holder as well as a scotty mount up front...it also looked very nice as well as I noticed it looked like a Heritage redfish.

I let the initial excitement grab me and I purchased the Heritage Angler for myself and the Pescador for my wife.

Both my wife and I are on the small side with me being 5'7 145 and my wife being 5'2 115 and her and I both noticed right away that the Peascador fit us better...it was just easier to lift and throw in the truck as well as being much easier to paddle/turn/maneuver it was also much quicker...I thoroughly enjoyed paddling the Pescador much more....with that being said the Heritage Angler was STABLE I could easily stand in this boat and fish as well as throw a small cast net from it so as you can see both kayaks have advantages and disadvantages.

One other thing I did not like about the Heritage Angler is it got blown around in the wind to much for my liking while the Pescador did not...all in all the Pescador fit my liking much more...I'd say the Heritage Angler had between 10-20 lbs more weight than the Pescador atleast.

Only after a couple of trips I noticed water was building up inside the kayak thought it was just from rain entering through one of the hatches but upon further inspection noticed cracking in the scupper holes.....traveled two hours back to academy to see what they could do and they swapped out the kayak for the pescador (plus $50 more) no question's asked and I have been more happy for this.

Another thing to consider between the two is the Heritage Angler 12 is just a special made run just for Academy and will not be made anymore for them...the warranty is actualy through Academy themselves for three years so if something happens to the boat you can take it back to academy for refund....the Pescador's warranty is a three year warranty also but this warranty is through the manufacture.

Both were great kayaks if the kayaker is on the larger side I think this person would find the Heritage with it's stability a better fit but smaller yaker's would probably enjoy paddling the Pescador me personaly I just did not enjoy paddling the Heritage Angler long distances as it realy took alot of effort to move it while the Pescador moves with very little effort and is fast.

I registered just to post about this as there is not alot of info on the net describing the Heritage Angler 12 that academy sells and hopefully this post will help...it's a nice boat but it is totaly different than the Pescador...here are some photo's of both....tight lines.

that heritage angler from academy doesnt come with seat? Thats one of the best things about the heritage redfish. The seat is super comfy. The front hatch looks different as well. And yes its a heavy boat. But that never bothered me. How much are they selling the heritage at academy? They used to be $700. I wonder if they "cheapened" it up in order to sell it at academy.

The Heritage Angler 12' was sold at the Academy closest to me for $450.99 while the Pescador was $499.99.

The only redfish I have had experience with was the 10 fter and the Academy version felt just as strong...very thick hard plastic I never would have imagined this thing cracking from it's build quality standpoint until it actualy happened.

I agree it's a shame the seat was not included and the hatch on this thing is to tiny compared to the real redfish.

I don't want to come accross to anyone that I think the heritage angler (or redfish) is a bad kayak as this is not the case I see both the Heritage Angler and Pescador being as being equal and both being a better fit for different crowds for different reason's.

If I did not have issues with my heritage angler i'd still be using it right now without any problems.

I think it is important for anyone in the market for a new kayakthat has interest in a pescador or Heritage Angler to demo either or if not those two demo an older tarpon 120 and redfish to get a feel for how each kayak fit's them as IMO they are both a night and day difference between them.

I'm thinking the heritage might be a better fit then if someone wants stability over anything else the heritage is better.

I have never tried hunting in a yak but have thought about it and I can tell you I would not try it in the pescador but would in the heritage...the herritage almost feels like your in a john boat instead of a kayak to me anyway (not a bad thing its just wider and more stable like every john boat I have been in).

Chess101 - I just realised you meant hunting for catfish my bad on me not reading more thoroughly.

Looking at those lunker's you are bringing in I can see the stability of the Heritage being a plus but I also see with your pictures on your posts that you are paddleing prety far out in the water and with that in mind you would sure appreciate the pescador....looks like you have a tough decision here.

I was just private messaged on another forum from someone who now owns the heritage angler 12' from academy.

This person emailed heritage if this is the same kayak as the redfish and this was the reply he got:

"They will paddle the same as they are both out of the same mold. We make that boat you saw specifically for academy. It is priced a bit less as it does not have our seat system in it. It is a good buy."

No problem, I wish I could give a clear cut answer on the better yak but as you can see they are prety much split down the middle and better at different things.

If I was using my kayak for just fishing i'd probably want the heritage angler more but since i will have to split fishing and paddling long distances (because the wife likes to keep moving instead of fishing)I am very happy I am paddling the pescador.

The good news is with the pescadore you are getting a tarpon 120 and with the heritage angler your getting a redfish 12' at almost half the cost which makes them both a steal getting such a quality NEW kyak for these prices....in my location people are asking 600-700 everyday on craigslist for older tarpon 120's used.
