Sam Rayburn is at 151 .21 ft. This means we are still 13.19 low. The rain we have been getting from the fronts has brought the level up a little. We are seeing a lot of sandbars and humps. There is a lot of timber above the waterline which makes it easy to see. The humps and sand bars have grass coming up all over the place. Add the timber and all of this looks like fishing paradise.

This week was great to be out on the lake. The weather warmed up and the lake was a great way to get away from things. It?s been peaceful with just a few of us hardcore fisherman looking for that Trophy Bass.

Trophy Bass Fishing is something that gets in the blood and this is the best time of year to hunt them. There are times when you catch a lot of fish and other times when it can be tough. If you’re looking for a special "Big Bass" that?s what makes it fun. It?s a challenge to out-smart one of them and hang on to it. That?s right, she’ll try everything to get loose and leave you holding the bag. We have several do that every year.

Bass Fishing on Sam Rayburn: What can you look forward to on the lake? It?s showing signs of coming up a little in the last few weeks and the water temperature has been dropping.. So what have the Bass been doing? The big question everyone is asking themselves. Well we got out the other day looking for fish and guess what we found? You guessed it. A group of nice fish; one went 8.5 lbs. Several others added with her gave a total weight of around 18 lbs. Of course we had one that got away after a short fight. Yep, she grabbed hold of the bait, I gave her a good jerk, she boiled some water, pulled drag, changed directions and let go. I was left holdin’ the bag. Don?t ask what bait. That?s my clients secret.

There are lot of fish in the grass and soft plastics have been catching some of them. Senko?s and Flukes, weightless, pulled over the grass and dropping them over the edges has been catching a few of them. Keep on your toes the bite can be very light. Now you guys that just have to chunk and wind here are three baits that are on my list. Lipless crankbaits, Crankbaits and Spinner baits. Covering a lot of water can be fun and working the grass and points can produce some nice fish. There are a lot of ways to work these baits and that is what makes the difference in catching fish or not. The deep bite is still there and Jigs and Carolina Rigs have been working off ledges and structure.

One of the new baits on the scene is the Alabama Rig. You need a good rod like a 7?6 heavy and better get a good heavy reel. This one bait that takes a little more to get it out there. I have caught a few fish on it but haven?t got any big one?s yet. Oh well, that?s fishing. Well hopefully I?ll get out there in the next few days and find my Trophy Bass. But for sure I can?t do it setting at home.

Don?t forget we have Gift Certificates for Christmas for that someone special and they are good for a year. There is also a discount running till Dec 25, 2011. So don?t wait.

Remember the Sharelunker Program entries started on October 1 and run thru April 30th. If you haven?t heard, it encourages anglers who catch a 13 - pound- plus largemouth bass to lend or donate it to the TPWD for spawning purposes. There are some great benefits doing this and one of them is that the angler receives a fiberglass replica of the bass. There is a 24- hour pager at 1-888-784-0600 Check out the Program rules at their site along with the Benefits.

Crappie; The Crappie fishing has been slow as they move up river. We are still catching a few. They should start bunching up and that?s when it will get good. Grab the kids and friends and come out to enjoy a day on the water. Everyone has loved the new pontoon with the changing room and the port-o-potty. We can handle up to 8 anglers.

Boat ramps at mid lake: Jackson Hill Marina cleaned their ramps a few weeks back and I have been using it. Cassell Boykin new ramps are still under repair but they have been launching some boats there. They got the hump taken out and will be working on extending one ramp at a time. You just have to check when you get there.
