I lived in Central Florida for quite a while, and wade fished for bass in the heart of some of the heavy gator inhabitated lakes in that area.
There are a few things you don't do, let em know you are scared, wade when visibility is low, like dawn, dusk, night, etc. Know when breeding season is and stay away from the eggs, and little ones, momma is pretty protective. Gators are not interested in you unless you are a threat or smell like food, and will usually leave you alone, unless you startle them they usually hiss or threaten you before attacking, if they see you are backing off slowly, they let you go.
The dangerous gator is one who has been fed by humans, then they associate human smell to food, and they become agressive towards you.
I would worry more about cotton mouths, or American crocadiles because they both are very territorial, and much more agressive than an ol gator.
