On thick line, like 25lb+ I occosanially have problems with knots coming untied or getting them cinched all the way down. Whats some of the knots y'all use, for the past 2 or so years I've been using this one, not sure what it's called but I like it a lot.

Shoot, that's almost exactly what I've been doing, minus the tree twist back down towards the eye.

I use a Palomar Knot. It's simple to tie and will very rarely fail.

I use a palomar knot on all my bass stuff, on thicker line it sometimes doesn't cinch down for me so I started using this one. When I lived in Florida we used one for huge groupers but I couldn't remember it to save my life.

Uni snell or the Non slip loop also known as a mono loop work well for me on heavy mono leaders and lines.

If time allows I will some times use the traditional snell as well.

If you are gonna use a circle hook you need to use a sneel knot. It will improve you hook ups. I do it like this: http://www.learntocatchcatfish.com/snell-knot

San diego Jam knot for me. Works on thin and thick line. Havent had a single problem breaking off on hooksets with this knot and have straightened many hooks when hung. Its a tough knot and very easy to tie once you do it a few times. i only use a palomar knot on my drop shot setups.

I do use the palomar for any line below 20 lb just cause it's easier. But it's the SDJK for everything at twenty or bigger.

Good topic IMO

Brian, I think your tying a Double Improved Clinch or Rivers Inlet Knot. I'm not an expert just happened to run across it while grabbing the pics below. Your knot looks strong.

The Palomar Knot is what I use mostly. It's easy for me & is very strong & fast. Have not had a Palomar knot fail me yet. My experience has been that the line will fail before this knot fails. Works on heavy line too wink

North American Fishing show use to run a segment called knot wars. Each week they would put these knots on a machine and test them side by side where the winner would go on to next weeks challenger.
The Palomar was unbeaten for many episodes.
I really don't need the Strongest Knot, just one that I can practically use, remember how to tie & won't fail. I used this simple fisherman's knot but it failed on me & it doesn't work on well on typical monos over 20lbs.

With mono I use my saliva to lubricate the line before I cinch it down

Great advise MR!thumb

Zombie i grew up using that fishermans knot! I found that it worked good on most mono line around 10-12lbs which is what i mainly used back then. But for heavier lines and fluoro it just didn't cut it. That's when i started trying different knots and started liking the san diego jam. I do use the palomar when I tie up my drop shot rigs but havent tried it for anything else. I will have to do that soon.

like x10 already. Never had a palomar knot fail yet. The lines breaks first.

Edit: typo

The Top knot is double improved cinch knot (or a double ugly) which is good for leader connection with a large lead bouncing to a swivel. It works as a good shock absorber, and good for areas with a lot of ground abrasion. Some applications, a palomar is knot the best. Although, a snell is better on circle hook.
