I've been fly fishing the Central Texas rivers for the past 3 years, and have recently been bit by a saltwater bug. Don't know where it came from or how to explain it.

I've never fly fished the TX coast before. I've been reading up on fly patterns, species and equipment. I'd like to plan a trip down to the coast in the spring, but I have no idea where to begin.

I'm roughly 3-4 hrs from Galveston or Corpus. I would be wading or kayaking. Are there any specific areas or flats that you would recommend for a first time out?

After a little research, I'm thinking of starting somewhere around Redfish Bay or Estes Flats. Does anyone know about these areas, do they fish well in the winter or early spring? And is there camping near by?

I am surprised noone else has jumped on this. Yes, there are locations to stay nearby in Rockport or if you want to be located closer to Corpus and fish your way over you could stay at Mustang Island State Park. The fishing this time of year for us fly flingers is tough, with most of your fishing going to be deep water dredging and blindcasting, but I have had some great fishing days on nasty weather days as well so you should go if you can.

Also, remember to spool up a cold water line, not a stiff mono-core tropical.

I wish Sikes wouldn't be so helpful sometimes. Just saying.

I've been wintering at AP the last 3 years and doing well on both sides of 361. Cooler water means gator trout. Estes, Redfishbay north and south, southbay, shamrock, charlies pasture, portbay, and st charlesbay all produced.I hooked 11 trout over 25" and a PB at 28.5" OTF. You can camp anywhere along 361 for free or Redfish bay rv--Ransom road rv-- drifters rv are close to everything. I will be there Feb-March if you wanna get together

I would recommend going to aransas pass and rent a kayak. You can then access either the lighthouse lakes or the brown and roots flats. This is one of the best places to sight cast to redfish. Spring time is ok, but it usually very windy. The best of year is late summer and fall.
