I have a Powell 5wt an it is a decent rod being as it is from China. That being said, it's worth $150 max.

If you get one of the versions made by Pres or walton Powell then it could be of collector value - these rods are universally considered to be some of the best made.
Do you have photos or can you tell us of its markings?

This one has a Chico, Ca address on the tube...The tube is very sturdy and has a brass cap..It has an individual serial number on it as well as a LG7 model number on it. How would I be able to tell if it was made by Pres or Walton?

Brian,
Your best best might be to wait until bud gets back from traveling, he knew these guys and would have a better answer.

The Walton Powell company was in Chico CA for years and began operations in the cane era, Walton Jr. ran things up till Pres took the helm. Pres was the final owner operator before the Charles schwab and his associates took over.
beyond these facts I don't know a lot.

There was a brief discussion on the UL site about Powell

Brian - If you are still looking for info on that Legacy rod I can tell you anything you need to know about it. I am quite knowledgable on the old Powell rods. I can tell you it is not an LG7 but an LGT (the T looks a bit like a 7) for Legacy Travel rod (ie 4 piece rod). Two important pieces of info...what is the address on the tube label...is it PO Box 3966 or PO Box 4000 - most likey its a PO Box 4000. And what is the serial number (if there is one) on the rod. It will be hand writen in white on the butt section just above the grip. The rod must be a dark coablt blue and labeled LGT 90910. Anyway, let me know that serial number and what else you want to know.
Cheers,
Rich

It is PO Box 4000 address. The serial number is A61364. I would be interested in all information you can provide me. Thank you for your help!

Thanks for the info Brian. It is a Chico built rod from Press Powell's Powell Rod Company. The serial number dates it to 1996. Those Legacy rods were the fastest action rods that the original Powell company made...the blanks are GT40 graphite. By today's standatds still fast (pretty stiff through the butt) but on the moderate end of fast. Great windy condition rods. I've got a 9' 5-6 Legacy that is my go to windy lake rod. Anyway, at 9-10wt not a particularly desirable rod for Powell fans. The 4,5 and 6 wt vintage Powell are where the best re-sale value is. I'd put the value of that rod, if it is mint, at about $125 give or take $25 depending on timing and venue. I recently sold one just like that but in only fair shape and I got $50 for it. One bit of data I'm trying to nail down is when the nickle silver winding check came into use by Powell. As a '96 rod I figure it should have one. Can you tell me if it does? And one other small factor in value...does the reel seat have a wood insert or is it all metal? Is there a detachable fighting butt or at least a threaded hole for one on the bottom of the reel seat? Anyway, I hope this helps and let me know if you have any other questions.
Rich

Rich,
That's great information. What brought you all the way from Chico, CA to Abilene, Texas?

Thanks J....I think. I love the Powell rods. Les - The Air Force brought me from CA to Texas. By the way Les - you have the ultralight site's old Yuku address in your sig. I think they migrated over to the new server along with Clarks and the Fiberglass Flyrodders...
