A great place to take a 5 year old is the TPWD Fisheries Center: Texas Freshwater Fisheries Center 5550 FM 2495, Athens, TX 75752 (903) 676-2277 ‎ a bit of a drive from DFW but is an upclose look at TX freshwater fish AND they have a catfish pond you can fish free with price of admisssion (believe me; it's FULL of catfish). They will supply you with rods/reels, bait, everything, just pack a lunch.
