Have you ever been before? It can be a lot cheaper if you just fly up and do your own thing. The biggest expense is the rental vehicle.

Alaska is a ton of fun. We went to one of the cheap places and glad we did. We left the cabin at 5 each morning and didnt get back till after 10 each night. We would go with the guides in the morning and then fish on our own in the afternoon. We were in the Kenai/Kasilof/Russian river areas. Father caught a 45lb king on the Kenai, my brother lost 3 on that river. I caught a 20lb king and my brother caught a 30lb king on the Kasilof. One of the best trips was a flyout we did on a last second buy. Just went up to one of the outfitters and asked if they had anything for that week that they would give us a discount on, as $450/ea was a little much. She offered us the trip for $300/ea, which was cheaper than anything we had even heard of. That was a great trip! Another fun outing was when we rented a canoe for $50 and went to some of the small ponds for rainbow trout. We had to hike the canoe back for a 1/2 mile, but it was fun. MAKE SURE YOU TAKE A LARGE PISTOL FOR BEAR PROTECTION. The game warden just laughed at us when we told him we had the pepper spray. He had 3 .45's on him. We had a grizzly about 20 yards from us across a river and actually had to hit a black bear with paddles on our boat to get it away. Halibut fishing was fun as well.

The place you are looking at looks like fun, but Kings is all you fish for. If you want a variety of fish, I'd look elsewhere. We paid less than $2400 for 7 days and fished somewhere different almost every day. There are a bunch of places, and they are all fun. You have a great time no matter what. Its just about what you like to do. If you like to be catered to, then there are places for that. Our place didnt do that at all. No meals. And it was great, cuz we werent around for them even if they had them! We picked something with 4 days of variety and left 3 days open so we could see what we liked best and then do those again. I'm very glad we did. Turns out on the Kenai, you can only catch 1 king a day, with a max of 2 per season! My dad caught his 30 minutes into the trip, then he had to sit there for the rest of the day without fishing because you cant have a line in the water if you have already caught one that day.

One thing to think about is getting all your fish back. We had one day where we brought back over 400 lbs of fillets between the kings, silvers, rockfish, ling cod and halibut. Airlines are not cheap!

Good lord that is long. PM me if you want more info.

Actually, you can catch and release kings ALL day long. Only after you keep (or remove from the water) a king are you done until midnight.

Have been to Alaska three summers now and it's wonderful up there! We go to Ketchikan because of cost, travel time and availability of self-guided rental boats. If you do your homework and shop carefully, you'll find a good deal for the place you want to go. In no particular order:

Shipping fish back on Alaska airlines is actually pretty economical. They charge $20 each for the first three checked bags, and $50 each after that. So long as your packed fish boxes weigh less than 50 pounds each (total weight including packing material), then they are treated as regular checked bags. There is no limit to how many boxes you may check, so long as you pay for all of them. Do be mindful of the logistics involved in getting your fish boxes to the airport in the first place!!

The game wardens are very strict about limits, licenses, recording your catch and so forth. Read the regulations for the area you'll be fishing and understand them, even if you have a guide! Nonresident limits are almost always lower than those for residents, with annual limits on many fish. Likewise, be sure you can ID the fish you catch so you don't run afoul of regs. Which brings me to ...

King Salmon smell like freshly netted shad (no, I'm not kidding!). None of the other salmon have this smell, so if you're in doubt about salmon ID, use the smell test. Otherwise, check the gums (all-black) and look for small black spots on the tail. Took me three summmers to finally be able to ID them correctly every time.

I guess giving advice on the particulars of your trip depends an awful lot on what your expectations are. Do you want a fully-guided trip or do you just want to be provided equipment and let loose to explore on your own? Or something in between? you can post on the Alaska fishing forum at http://forums.outdoorsdirectory.com/forumdisplay.php/23-Alaska-Fishing-Forums for advice from locals on their recommendations. They've been very helpful to me the past two years, and if you let the guys there know what you want, one of the guides may cut you a good deal from the forum.

It is truly a beautiful place. I love Alaska and I have been going for 12 years now every summer for 8-16 days at a time. From what you have described, you definitely want a package deal like the one you posted. I do things a lot differently, but i enjoy the combat fishing, not salmon fishing from a boat. It is not for everyone that is for sure.

Hope you catch a hog!
