If you've never thought about wearing your PFD when fishing, now's the time to start. Already been mentioned on here, water temps are in the low 50s and getting colder of course. Lots of clothes tend to make it more difficult to move around in the boat. Loosing your balance becomes easier. Doesn't take long in 50 degree water for hypothermia to get you. If you have a switch for Tilt-n-Trim on the motor, you can put your foot on the cavitation plate and use the motor to partially raise you out of the water. If not, think about putting a large diameter rope off the transom with a couple knots in it so your hands don't slip to help pull yourself in the boat. Not easy getting back in the boat with lots of wet clothes on. They get very heavy when wet.

Any other tips would be appreciated.

Great advice, I read of an elderly man who fell out of his boat and could not pull himself back into the boat. The only thing that saved him was that the wind blew his boat to shore and he was able to hold on long enough to get to shore. If the wind had been blowing from the opposite direction it was miles to the other side of the lake. After reading this story I ordered a quality ladder for the transom of my boat. I hope I never have to use it for an emergency but if I do it could be the best $400 I ever spent. Stay safe out there.

Although I don't have this exact one (only a jacket), but I thought about this type of floatation strongly for winter fishing.

The number 1 excuse for anglers NOT wearing their lifejacket, especially during the winter, is that it's too bulky after a thick layer of winter gears. Think outside of the box for once and so...
Why not have your floatation device as your winter outerwear?
(I just picked a link from the net, and I'm sure there are many other brands with various pricing) A good set of overall isn't all that much cheaper!
Please take LIFE seriously!!!

Good points, Ken. Growing up in Northern Illinois and having a severe addiction to waterfowl hunting had me on the water many times when the air temp was "life threatening" in it self. I know first hand what it is like to fall out of a boat and get back in the boat looking like a popsicle!! Lucky for me, the water was waist deep. It takes but a few minutes before you can't functions at all!!! Standing, grasping, let along walking was impossible within minutes and it takes hours to recover completely! If I had been by myself any one of the times I would not be typing this today! AND I was much younger than I am today!! Don't under estimate the cold!!

If you dont have a trim switch on your motor, keep a coil of rope tied to something in the inside of the boat ( I keep a bow rope tied in front at all times).. that you can reach if u fall out, then quickly tie several loop knots in the rope big enough to fit your foot in,then use that to climb back in the boat.
