Just some questions about gar in winter.
I saw gar all over Bull Creek in Lake Austin this summer, they would hit cut bait suspended a little below the surface. Went there last weekend and didn't see a single one.
Any different tactics I need for winter gar fishing? what is the best way to locate them during the winter?
thanks

Lake Austin,
I don't have electronics on my kayak, so deep points are hard to find. I saw them all over Bull Creek and the country club cove this summer but they've moved away from there since the cold started.

tie a heavy weight to the end of the rope. on the rope mark out every 2ft tie a knot and every 10ft attach a easily visible marker to the rope. when out fishing you can use that to find the depth, find drop offs and structure.

Cant remember for sure who it was but I think I learned that from my brother out at our boat dock. He was trying to find any deep holes.

You could probably do that with your anchor rope too if you wanted...

Yea I've given up. I know someone who caught one last week while catfishing. More than 45 feet below.
I'll wait till spring when they are all over the place shallow and you can pretty much sight fish them

if you want gar to to the spillway in granger they are so bad out there i always catch em on perch or shad bobber or bottom if you cant catch bait dont worry take a 12 in. section of white braided rope tie to the burnt end and let one end an let frey and work it like a top water i have caught so many gar that way and more than once i couldnt vatch them on bait of any kind but the white rope did the trick.
