Abu Garcia 6500 (Not a BCX) reel with a 7' or longer medium-heavy rod, or a 60 series or bigger spinning reel with a 7' or longer medium-heavy rod. 20-30lb mono main line, or braid. The Quantum Optix 60 spinning reels are supposed to be pretty solid for the money, or a little higher end are the Cabela's Salt Striker spinning reels. Rods are a matter of taste. Pro Angler rods are very popular, they can be ordered from any number of guys on the forum. They have a casting rod that I have one of, I like it a lot. Stainless guides, long handle, they come in EVA foam or cork grips, price is reasonable. Also, the good ol' Ugly Stik CAL1100 rods are popular here too.

Just start reading thru the post and you will catch on, lots of good reels and rod. Pro-Anglers have both good rods and reels.

Any abu garcia 6000 as long as it is not BCX. Rods you can go as cheap as the $12 Academy yellow TC rod, or you can get a nice proangler for about $40.

What's up with the BCX? Inexperienced here, just wondering why y'all dislike them.

I love my abu Garcia ambassadeurs. All of mine are the 5000/5500 size. Is prefer bigger reels, but I was just buying when I found great deals. The 5500 is essentially the same reel as the 6500, it has the same internals, just no clicker, and it has less line capacity. So any reel it the c3 line is great.
My favorite rods are my pro angler rods, but I also have 3 of the tournament choice rods, and for $12, they are great. The ugly sticks are supposed to be great too, but I don't own one.
As far as spinning reels, the quatum optix 60 or 80 is a great option. I had 2, and they worked great, I just found after a while, I liked the smaller profile of a bait caster.
If you are on a tight budget, the bass pro mega cast reels are ok. I have one, and like it so far. Some guys have had issues with them, some guys have had them for a couple of years.

I have a couple of the Abu 700i's, and I love them. I just haven't hooked a big enough fish to really give them a workout. The last I caught were about 7 to 8 lbs. They are $110.00 at Wal mart. I think I have one on an Ugly stick and the other on a rod I ordered, don't remember the brand.
