Red Snapper? 20ft Deep V bay boat? Leaving out of Port O' Connor, any thoughts?

We do it all the time -- even out to Liberty reefs - normally we get all the BIG snaps we want 20 miles offshore and forty miles out the jetties - days with long periods and 3' or less - or if you are tough up to five feet.

I even used to do it in a 16' C Skiff - boat size is immaterial - its can you handle one in the big pond?

Ship to shore VHF, GPS, back up battery -- EPRIB in case

This was twenty foot boats forty out last summer

Run to weedlines and cobalt blue water - usually 30+ miles

It's been told many times that POC has the best winter
red snapper opportunities within the Tx 9nm zone.....

Rik Jacobsen has a book you need, but it appears his website
is down. google red snapper fishing &/or his name & you'll find it.
that & a copy of Hilton' offshore atlas from Academy.
put all that together with what you've got, pick a good day, & go!

It depends. Sure you can do it but I would caution that conditions are going to wrong more often than not. I run a 22' bay boat out of POC and mainly have to fish weekends. This past summer none of the flat days happened when I was down. I still fished out to 15 miles but running further would have been a pain. Hope for flat days, but don't count on them.

If you can only make 10 mph headed out and fillings are rattling out of your teeth all the way, how far do you really want to go? The flip side is when it's too rough to run far, you can bounce around the near rigs and catch snapper. They won't be big but you can still catch your limit.

I would agree Riks book has some good bottom numbers inside 9NM at POC - he has a lump just NE of POC jetties thats real productive for winter snaps its about nine miles NE of jetties and comes up to thirty feet in 70' of water - you have to work it by drifting with engine running - impossible to anchor on - usually has lots of bull reds, gulf trout, snaps to twenty, a few warsaw every now and then -- tarpon in summer

NO don't ask - buy Riks book

Best $50 I have spent in a while - he usually updates it every year - early winter fishing is pretty good in close if you are on relatively unfished spots

There is an OLD rusting out rig SE from Pass Cavallo about twelve miles SE and five off the beach, 65' water - thats a good winter snap spot --

Like always the seldom visited spots are your friend. Do your homework --

I have Riks book from a few years ago. Most of the spots in that edition are too far on most days for my setup. Very few inside the 9nm. Sounds like I may need to get an updated copy.

I have taken my 18ft out a couple of times. I just keep a flag up and if it starts moving, I start in.
