Sounds like it could just be the belt...I'm not sure what the repairmen are charging now, but I don't think it's that hard of a fix. You can usually find some nice ones on craigslist for $150 or less.

how old is it? this is my main determining factor in washer/dryer repair vs buy new.
I think Kevster does this for a living though, so he would be the authoritative voice.
Factor #2: Do you mind hanging your bvds on a clothesline?

Fatty suffers from acute craftsmanaphobia. pay to get it done right. I'm right there with him though, on most stuff. I fix something by breaking two other things in the process.

You smelled burned rubber and it's not coming on at all? Is there any black discoloration around the plug?

it might be the fuse....It doesnt turn on at all even the light inside doesnt light up...I think the fuse is in the back of the dry and could be easily removed???? The fuse is easy to change. I have a gas dryer and the only thing the fuse does is activate the heat. Dryer will still run with a blown fuse just won't heat up. Might be different in an electric dryer. It's a $20.00 5 minute fix if it's the fuse.

If you smell burnt anything do not replace the fuse. If it is blown, it blew for a reason. You need to find out why it blew, did belt come off and wrapped around motor? Or did something burn up. Replacing fuse will just cost you a fuse until you find out why.

So I should just call a repairman? If you know how to make a good pot of chili, then make some and invite Kevster over for some good ol' chili. He can probably get that fixed right up.

I don't know if that will blow a fuse, but it is a fire hazard. You should always check that lint screen before it's a problem.

You also need to clean lint out of the dryer itself that does not get into the lint filter. On some dryers, the front will come off easily for you to clean. Anytime I notice the dryer not drying the clothes as well as it should, I clean lint that does not make it to the lint filter and the vent.

Get ready to replace the thermal overload switch on it. It's about burnt up by now. Air flow restrictions eat them like candy, eventually.
