There is a record on Caddo for paradise bass. Does anyone know anything about this fish and is there anywhere I can catch them. Seems strange, I guess they are a yellow bass/striped bass hybrid that has been stocked. I found this out due to the research I have done. Any info would be appreciated

The yellow bass, white bass and striped bass are all members of the true bass family and can cross to form hybrids. The yellow/striped hybrid is called a Paradise Bass. They were an experiment by TPWD in 1977, and were stocked in Gladewater City, McClellan, and Weatherford Lakes.

The more common cross is the Palmetto Bass, which is a cross between a white and a striped. They are commonly just called a hybrid and are stocked in many Texas lakes.

Crosses occur in nature as well as in the hatchery. I happen to hold the record for a yellow/white cross from Lake Benbrook.

If you want to find a Paradise Bass you will have to fish in a lake with both Yellow and Striped Bass in good numbers. They will be mixed in with the Palmetto (Hybrid) Bass and catching one will require a lot of luck. As the Princess was told:"You have to kiss a lot of frogs to find a prince."

Tawakoni has a few. Last year I caught what we thought was a state record yellow bass while deadsticking. It was just under 4 ounds on a scale. Lookling up the records we saw the paridise cross. Dont think you could ever go out and target them though. Ive only caught one.

One of my customers caught a big one this year but missed the record by a few ounces. There not real uncommon here on Cedar Creek.

thanks for the info from all! I will be hunting the elusive paradise bass... I like to catch weird stuff! I'm assuming they are a "yellow striper".

Interestingly, I think, I may have caught one in 1973, in the pool below the little dam by the Tarrant Co. courthouse. This would have been, I guess, an escapee from the old Eagle Mountain state hatchery or the National Hatchery, maybe. Maybe that is where the experiments for the 1977 ones were done. I think I might have a pic. somewhere of it.

The only "True" Paradise bass are a RESULT of a female Striped Bass eggs crossed with a male yellow bass sperm - any natural crosses could only come from ONE lake Currently in Texas - that being Tawakoni/Toledo(or downstream in Sabine River) which has both yellow bass and Striper, other faint possibilities would be Lavon, Hubbard or Cedar Creek which all had both species years ago - and such a cross would be once in a lifetime occurence --

This does NOT include any crosses of white bass/yellow bass which are simply hybrid crosses. This cross is also recognized in TPWD record keeping - Lake Fork has some really big ones

Paradise Bass were last stocked in lake Graham in 1978 - they have since extirpated

All lab crosses went to Female Striper X White Bass male --

It was the hope of TPWD managers that the Paradise Bass would fill the niche in smaller lakes by utilizing bigger shad and sunfishes as prey. It was found that White Bass/Striper cross had more vigor and did just as well in smaller impoundments.
