After spending Thanksgiving with the family Manleyfisher and I were in anxious for some big pike so Friday morning we drove up to Navajo Lake.
Dynamic Lures pro staff Kris has been catching some decent fish lately so we figured we'd go give it a shot. Anyone who's been around for a while knows I've had a love/hate relationship with this lake for years. Granted I have fished it less then a handful of times, I've only landed 2 small pike there.
Friday we got to the lake around 1:00 and fished until 5:00. I was using the gold Dynamo LP and landed a 13 pounder then lost another on the perch Dynamo LP, Manleyfisher hooked one on the sexy shad Dynamo LP but couldn't manage getting it to the boat. After wrapping up day 1 we spent the evening fishing below quality waters on the San Juan and managed a few browns and rainbows on HD Trout. Then pigged out on the leftover turkey, ham, yams, stuffing, mashed potatoes, and red chili we had brought along before calling it a night.
Saturday morning we met Kris and some other guys from Colorado at the ramp for a "Dynamic Rodeo". We launched and headed out with 5 boats, of which only 1 had a smaller motor then my boat. Eventually we caught up with the Lund that had a 300 Verado but I suspect he had been there casting for 20 minutes before we arrived. LOL.
Saturday was a tough day, we had heavy winds and the bite was slow. I managed a 10 pounder using the gold Dynamo LP and lost 1 other, ManleyFisher landed a pike that was small but still killed the skunk using a Joe Bucher jointed crank. Later in the day Manleyfisher missed 2 more bites on the sexy shad Dynamo LP. Kris and the guy fishing with him managed a 14 pounder on the perch pattern and a 12 pounder on the silver black model. The guy with the big Lund landed a 17.9 pound beast on the gold, and I'm not sure how the other guys fared. We called it a day around 5:00 and again went down to the river and tossed HD Trout and landed some decent browns; my biggest went 17". We ate some dinner and hit the sack for some z's.
Sunday morning the boat was covered in frost and you could tell the air was much colder then it had been the previous morning. We launched the boat around 8:00 as we had the previous day and headed up the San Juan arm. Right when we got to a promising spot I hooked a fish and shortly after lost it, then it happened again, and again, and again. The fourth time I looked at my lure and noticed the hooks were rounded from setting the hook on the many rocks and trees we were fishing. I sharpened the hooks on my gold Dynamo LP and BOOM, next fish I hooked I got to the boat and it went 14.5 pounds! I ended up missing another fish before the end of the day and Manleyfisher landed another 20+" pike, that one ate a 6" Castaic rainbow swimbait. We were supposed to call it a trip on Sunday but Manleyfisher is a diehard and was dead set on spending the night so we could give it another shot on Monday. We reserved the room at Fishheads for one more night and they kindly allowed mento plug in my SD card so that I could delete the film that had no action on it. After that we headed back down to the river but this time I didn't catch anything and Manleyfisher got one rainbow on a FCS spinner. Then we ate dinner and watched the end of the Sunday night football game.
Monday morning we slept in and around 8:00 I was getting the gear arranged on the boat when a couple dozens ducks flew over me and dropped mossy grenades all over the boat, our rods, tackle boxes, you name it! After cleaning the poop off my hat and clothes I jokingly told Manleyfisher it's supposed to be good luck when a bird craps on you, let alone 4 birds get ya! Lol, he wasn't so sure he would like to be granted "luck" in such a way.
Fishing wasn't so hot Monday, I landed a 7 pounder and Manleyfisher got his respectable fish, a 6 pound pike. It was about 2:00 when we were talking about calling it a day when my Dynamo gets rocked. I set the hook hard, something felt different about this fish. It was coming in quick but still put up some good tugs here and there. I couldn't believe my eyes when a beast smallmouth came thrashing to the surface! I could see that only one of the hooks of the treble was in it's mouth and I didn't want to risk it throwing the hook while trying to lip or boga her so I kept up the momentum and lifted her into the boat! This thing was huge, no doubt the biggest smallmouth I've ever caught. She measured 20 1/4" and weighed a bit over the 6 pound mark on my boga!
Thanks to Manleyfisher for rolling with me and making the trip possible. Dynamic Lures were getting crushed by the big fish that's all I can say! All names from this report are handles from the NM forum fishenchantment.com
Here's the video, enjoy!
