I know Fairfield gets asked about a lot but can someone give a quick status report? I have a friend who wants to go there and fish over the Christmas holidays. From my understanding, the 2 last summer fish kills really hurt things and the boat ramps are not usable. Based on the last info I read, I would prefer not to go.
I did call. The lady I spoke to said that the boat ramp in the camping area was open. She said the lake is only 3 feet low. They are catching some bass and netting and bow fishing for tilapia. Thanks for the phone number.
My understanding is they will continue to generate but will have to rail in outside coal to meet the guidelines of the clean air act. Not sure if that is correct but that is what I have heard from many of the employees at the plant.
A guy that works for me was at Fairfield this weekend bank fishing. He said they caught 2 reds over 24" and 4 in the 12" range. They were all returned to the lake. So we know there are at least six reds left in the lake. He also said that the catfishing was really good. Hopefully there is some life left in that lake after all.
There are plenty of redfish in that lake regardless of the fish kills...there are definately plenty of fish over 10 pounds in there..just not as many as back in 2008.

I really miss that place...I caught 29 reds in less than 3 hours the evening before the first big fish kill...Now I have to drive down to Sabine to get my "red-fix"

Fish the Sabine River. Catch whites, bass, trout, flounder and reds all on bass tackle!

I have fished it three times since the kill. Having exactly zero bites. I'm sure lots of people know more about fishing the lake than I, but I don't know of any guides who are working it now or plan to any time soon. That may give a hint of what to expect.
