Dead sticking is what my ol lady says I do when I've had too much to drink. Seriously, dead sticking is imparting little or no action upon your lure. http://www.bassintips.com/deadsticking.htmlThe article talks about worm fishing, but I have heard of the technique being used with spoons and slabs also.

Simply put, you just lower a soft plastic like a sassy shad and hold it dead still in front of the fishies face. I personally suck at it, but it works. I've seen it work!
There's a lot more to it than that, I'm sure some of the pro's will chime in.

We have been having better luck with flukes than with sassy shad. We have been using 1 ounce and 3/4 ounce jig heads with the Dead assassin type flukes from www.moestackleshop.com. There could have been a video shot today if someone would have had a fully charged battery in his phone.

Dead sticking is another tool in the box for catching fish. Most of the time deadsticking is best for cooler water temps and suspended fish. The key ingredient for deadsticking is locating fish on the graph. Then you need to determine where in the water column the fish are. Last on the list is getting your bait at the right depth. Usually just a few inches over the fish. Lots of baits will work. The main one I use is an 5" assassin on a triangle/sassy jighead. I try to use as light of a jighead as wind or drift allows. Anywhere from 1/2 to 1 oz. When I have fish on the graph that just wont bite, I usually go to a 1/4oz head and a 3.5" assassin or a 1/2 bucktail jig. That will usually solve the problem. There is no wrong way to deadstick. It is all just experimenting and finding how they want it. Lots of times they want a slight shake every few seconds, sometimes you have to bump the trolling motor really slow and keep it barely moving. The main idea is just a very slow presentation. It is a whole lot like crappie fishing, but just with heavy tackle, lol! You forgot to mention the Ninja Skills...

Couldn't get the hang of deadsticking till I got a good graph and could see my bait under the boat on the screen for good placement. Now late Fall and Winter fishing is really productive for Hybrids. Can't wait for it to start up on Palestine this season.

We dead stick with slabs also. Johnny You beat me to it, Johnny. Just holding the slab or plastic about an inch off the bottom in 20-30 feet produced well last winter and a few times this year. Small slabs seem to work better.

and they sometimes bite very light. I just set the hook when something is different about the feel of the rig I am using. If there is a guy good at it he will out catch the new guy 5 to 1. Practice practice practice.
