My podner Jsplinter has a potential idea for sinking brushpiles and I would like to know if anybody else does it, we are thinking that we can study topo maps with contours lines , plan exactly where we want to sink the brush, input the specific grid coordinates into a handheld GPS,, then go drop the brush on the coordinate. Basically almost opposite of riding around finding spots, marking an area, them dropping brush. It should save lots of time just riding around looking for ledges, dropoffs and specific depth an burning gas and daylight.

That's how I would do it, if I did it. Still trying to figure out how to deploy brush piles from my kayak without looking like an idiot.

I havent gone as far as to input the cords on a handheld GPS, but I have gone as far as to study a topo map and find where two creeks intersect at the main lake and then go zig zag across that area until I found exactly what I was looking for. Of course I was doing this years ago when I was in college and on a college students budget. Using a flat bottom boat and tiller motor with a 99.00 garmin GPS, but it does work. With todays technology you could just about name your spot before you ever launched your boat. Good luck with it!!!

thanks, location and orientation of the brush seems to be key, Ive studied several brushpiles that were very good when the water was up but are now on dry land, VEE shaped structure, such as a fork of a tree, that faces into currentor south wind, seems to be a great place for crappie to hang out. It may act as kind of a corral when the baitfish comes into the area, and the crappie can ambush them. Even on partially exposed laydowns that ive fished, 90 percent of the time, the crappie will be hiding in the crotch of the vee. (parden the decsription). What we are trying to do is put out piles in the very best possible locations, for maximum effectiveness. Heaven knows ive put out enough that were just wrong.

In theory it will work but in many cases I have found that most topo maps to be off a little bit, espeially the depth contour lines.
good luck if you try it.

That's exactly how I do it, I look at topo maps and my card on my 1197 and have a real good idea where im gonna set the brush before I get to the lake. But like John said I still work the area a bit to find that right spot to drop the brush. To answer your question, yes it will save you time on the water and gas money.

Also find where you want it exactly, then throw a marker over board. Drop ur brush or whatever, go get more, come back and drop it on the otherside of the marker till u have what ever shape pile u want. I like big circles10-20 ft wide with a small weeping willow in the middle.

Or drop ur marker, screw together a PVC condo and sink it in the shape u want.

This is how im planing on doing it in the future. Iv been studying the topos in my Navionics card in my GPS for a while now. Iv found that a lot of these places that look like would be a good spot to put one already have one.

Don't worry about it. You will be an idiot on a kayak who always knows where to find fish because he put in the work. I don't mind being that idiot.
I just tie off the brush pile to the back of the kayak with a slip knot so that when I pull on it it will come loose easily. I don't attach my weight until I get to my location. I carry the weight infront of me because you don't want to be reaching behind you to pick up something that heavy.
When I get to my spot I stow my paddle on the opposite side of me, I sit side saddle on the side I want to drop the pile at. I lose my pile from the boat and pull it up along the side and then attach my weight. Making sure all your body parts and any thing else are clear of the line and the brush pile I then drop the weight and watch the pile sink.

I do boo balls the same way but I will take out 6 or so at once.

For crappie condos that I built into a bucket wieght I just set them on the deck in front of me.

There is also Hot Maps Explorer which has the contour lines and also "mouse-over" GPS coords. It is very helpful when planning a trip as well as potential drop points.

pepop, do you have this? I read a review on it and they said it showed only two depths and was not worth the 20 bucks. Give us YOUR opinion please.

rockhopper, mine is the 2008 version so like the 2008 Navionics, it has more detail than the current release's and I got mine off ebay for $10 so it was a good deal. It doesn't show all the contour lines that the Hot Maps program for sonar/mapping units shows but I have also added a "track" of the river & all creeks of my home lake (Palestine) so it shows me everything except the fish. HA! Without my channel's "track" it probably wouldn't be worth the $20.

Not to steal from pepops thunder but wanted to add one more thing about the pc app. Just like the 2011 chips, the app also slows you to update as many times for one year. Also this has nothing to do with navplanner. So you don't need a chip or any other hardware.

So I would need to purchase a HotMap Chip for my 898 and they let me download the pc app for free?

I thought putting your card in a pc card reader would wipe it out.

jsplinter, this sounds like exactly what I've been looking for. If you obtain the PC app PLEASE let me know how it works for you. Thanks! cheers
