Wanted to know since I do not know how long the water pump has been in this Johnson 140 and I am getting a new one put on, is there anything else I may need to change on the lower unit so I feel safe? Also, how big a chore is changing the pump?

Since you have not dropped a lower unit before I would let a boat mechanic do it or at least walk you through it. It is not that easy to put it back. Steve at Lake Weatherford Marina is really good on Evinrudes and Johnsons and quite reasonable. I would change the lower unit lube at the same time. Steve's number is 817-597-0419. If you are too far away I am sure someone close knows a good mechanic near you.

If you have a good sense of basic tools its not a hard job we did it on a 150 merc no problem from watching a you tube video saved us about 400 bucks by doin it ourselves

Your best bet is to leave it alone. If the water discharge holes are spewing and it is running well don't fix it. The water pump impellers in those old Evinrudes and Johnsons last a long time and are better than modern replacements.
Use nothing but Evinrude brand oil and clean high octane fuel and it will go forever.
I have a 1973 Evinrude 50 hp that still runs like new.

There are 4 bolts on the lower unit and one under the lower carb for the linkage. You will need a swivel head socket for this. Once you have loosened disassemble you will see the housing 4 5/16 bolts take off and replace impeller. Don't lose the key pin when pulling the impeller. Twist the new impeller into housing and reassemble. 20 -30 minute job on a scale of 1-10 the job is a 2. In the future if you want to buy the rebuild kit Napa auto parts seels the kits for about 40 dollars.

If you have never tackled this type of chore before its gonna take you alot longer than 20-30 mins as described. The lowerunit comes off really easy after you remover the bolt under the bottom card BUT getting that same little shift shaft and the 5/16 screw back into place is a booger bear. ALSO if somebody is paying 400.00 for a lower unit service your getting ripped off. I charge 159.00 at my shop on ALL BRANDS of outboards. Take it to a reputable Outboard Tech with a reasonable price to do the job. Its money well spent...

I order all my parts for my 96 Johnson from boats.net. I would order the complete kit, which includes all the gaskets, housing, keeper, etc. Order the maintenance manual and it gives detailed instructions on how to change the water pump.

I have a 1973 Evinrude 50 hp that still runs like new. This is BAD Advise! If you were running an engine that cost $5,000 to repair I think you would follow normal recomended procedure and replace every year.

Very well put Cajun. A trip to the boatshop for a new impeller is alot cheaper than a new powerhead. Preventative maintenance is the key. Why make a bigger problem than you already have by neglecting the current problem.

Have a mechanic do it. I "saved" money a couple of years ago on my 1999 115 Johnson by doing it myself. About a year later, I had to replace the lower unit. Suspected reason------Improper shift shaft adjustment.

This is a good vid on how to change a Merc impeller. Obviously Johnsons are different but there are little tips that apply to both motors. I watched it a few times and even emailed the mechanic that shot it. He was very helpful. I would have just had a mechanic do it but #1 it wasn't my boat #2 It was a 12 day wait at the nearest shop. #3 I'm trying to relearn all those mechanic skills I haven't used in 30 yrs. Like most here, on a nice, newer, EXPENSIVE engine I'd take it to the expert! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BiQNhFYFvdQ
