Took my son to visit my parents for Thanksgiving. Ended up scanning some old 35mm slides. Check out the teeth on this one. Catfish pic complete with chicken in background. Another similar species of catfish, these things fight like crazy! A big freshwater stingray. Walking along a jungle trail through a swamp.

I didn't want to leave. My Mom said yesterday that she thought I would have been happy if they just left me there and I agreed with her. I could have traded fish for anything I needed. Here are a few more pics. I'll try to get more the next time I visit. Some of those slides are going bad and I want to get them saved on the computer. My dad with some kind of fish related to a shad or tarpon. Extremely hard to catch as their mouth was all bone. Me with some peacock bass. (very good to eat) My little brother with a big catfish. (these were not as good to eat but the locals were happy to take them)

Wow you had a cool childhood. I am heading to Lima Peru in Jan for my daughter's wedding. Any good places to see?
What does your Dad do?

What does your Dad do? Lima is basically another world from where I grew up. It's on the other side of some really big mountains. It never rains in Lima and is cloudy and dreary 9 months out of the year. January should be sunny and beautiful. Go surfing, try out some of the millions of types of good food from all over the world, go see some Inca ruins. My parents were missionaries.

What kind of fish is that toothy critter? We called it a chambira but the more well known name that you can find on the internet is payara (which is actually a more heavy set version that lives in faster water) edit: If you've ever wondered what eats piranhas, this is it. I don't think a bonier fish exists. The only way to get any food value for humans out of these things is to cut off it's tail and take a stick and start smashing it and squeeze meat paste out the tail end like squeezing a tube of toothpaste.

Ive been to Bogota, Colombia about 6 times (work reasons). Its always cold and raining there. It can get quite humid and foggy but rain would probably scare the locals more than an earthquake. Most roofs are flat and there is no water drainage system because they don't need it. perutravelguide - read the 1st paragraph. edit: Over the mountains in the jungle where I lived, it averages about an inch of rain per day. It can rain so much that you have to get up in the middle of the night to bail out the boats to keep them from sinking.
