You can take some cut bait, shrimp, or squid and catch some pretty fair size gaff top catfish at Station St. Pier. Or, you might try Charlie's Pasture. I have caught some decent specks there. I have seen some red fish caught at both places. If your just going for fun Station St. Pier would be my choice.

I just got back from port a, Horace caldwell pier between second and third sand bar we caught plenty of bluefish all nice size, 1 spanish mac, actually got to beach 1 shark a 4 footer, 3 more sharks cut our wire leaders, caught plenty of whiting, we never went to the end of the pier once all between noon and 4;30 pm my wife cught more then enough fish, the kids would have a blast plus it was a warm day catching some rays and a clod beer.

we were using a small rod with a double drop rig with 1 o/o circle hooks t o catch whiting on cut mullet just big enough to cover hook. then we cut the small whiting in half and used those on our bigger rods, 1 rod with 1/8 ounce sliding egg sinker and glass bead tied to an 8 inch wire leader with a 4 o/o crcle hook that was our drifting bait caught most of our blues and smack on that set up, same set up with a 1 ounce weight and 5 o/o hook to throw further and bump bottom more and hold in the sand we were catching our sharks on that rig, first we were using 50lb test mono for leaders but kept getting cut off before we could even set the hook so switched to wire leaders more hook ups, even the wire leaders sometimes weren't tough enough 60Lb wire but it was all we had with us. Just catching the whiting was fun every thing else was a bonus.

I live in Abilene if i could go back this weekend, I'd be there in a heartbeat. HC pier is under new ownership they're charging $2 a rod and no more then 2 rods per person. You can bring coolers on pier but no glass bottles, if you have a throw net there was some scattered mullet on the beach real shallow and easy to catch if you find them unfortunatly i couldn't find any that day if not I would be using live finger mullet on same rig, good luck and catch some for me.
