Not to be argumentative, isn't a perch a game fish. Sold commercially for all kinds of other "game fish". Please sight the law and where to find it, as I would like to know. thx. It is every fisherman's responsibility to know and obey fishing regulations--ignorance of the law is not a defense. I'll help this time check out page 32 of the TPWD Regulations summary "bait: Something used to lure any wildlife resource. It is unlawful to use game fish or any part thereof as bait" P32 Texas Parks and Wildlife Outdoor Annual 2011-2012 Regulations summaRy

Catfishing creeks, we will on occation, hook up to a hybrid. Most of the time like stated above, its in merky conditions mostly. Caught lots and lots of sandies on liver over the years. Shad is better as stated above, obviously. But IMO, I like a sassy shad....

Not a hybrid fisherman, but what I was told concerning Braunig and Calaveras Lakes, that the fish being raised for release are fed a pellet feed which contains liver and that is why folks fishing those lakes with liver are successful catching hybrids.

Well first off what most call perch here really are not perch at all but in the sunfish family and they are not game fish, so they can be used as bait.

Ive caught many sand bass on livers TP&W does list Yellow bass as a game fish. There is just no limit on size or number. http://www.tpwd.state.tx.us/regulations/fish_hunt/fish/definitions.phtml

I know up on the East Coast when people fish for Stripers coming in from the saltwater to spawn, they use liver and clams

I have caught some BIG hybrids in the Elm Fork using chicken liver! Hybrids will darn sure bite it, not sure why stripers wouldn't.

I once saw a guy catch a 42 flathead cat out on Lake Carolyn in Las Colinas on a live yellow bass. He was catching 10-11 and 12 inch yellows, and using them for cat bait! He hooked and lost one much bigger than the 42 lb one the same night. This was in the dead middle of the dog days of summer but it was about 2 AM.

I have used chicken livers from the bank with success on hybrids to about 5lbs or so. We have used the whole live sunfish a few times with luck. Another bait that worked well when I was a kid on hybrids was while fishing below the dam fishing with water dogs, those ugly suckers got bit and often....Man I would like to drift some humps with those sometime. With all this said I done this type of fishing from about late April to August with these baits.

Another thing that I found while researching this--and something that I am guilty of often--is throwing out shad. I have loaded up my boat several times and thrown out shad that I did not use for the racoons. According to TPWD that is illegal--I have never heard of anyone getting a ticket for that but they could issue one.

Have a friend with a ranch lake stocked with hybrids. Love to flyfish for them. Been several times they would not hit an arti but would hit the liver as soon as it hit the water and this lake is clear! Of course I'm sure the feeders set up had nothing to do with it. HaHa.

Rudy Be careful..yellow bass are a Texas "gamefish" and are unlawful to use as bait.

Chicken liver is more affective in smaller impoundments that have shallower warmer water..shrimp is good too.

Back home when I lived in Kansas I owned the Marina on a small county lake. Catfishermen caught more hybrids than most, all while using liver fot bait on the bottom.

I'm from the northeast and have caught stripers from the surf and boats for a many years until I came down here 20 yrs. ago. We did use clams but I never heard of liver for stripers. I used mostly lures, bunker, squid and live eels. PB was 42# off the surf on rigged squid. I used to catch lots of hybrids to 9# on chicken liver at Squaw Creek in the summer up the north end in the river channel. That was before 9/11. No more hybrids there now. Also at Proctor.
