Ok, so yesterday when I was fishing for bass, I noticed three HUGE catfish, or they're huge to me with their heads about 7 to 10 inches across( these measurements aren't exact since I was estimating when I saw it swimming quite close to the bank), and so I decided to try out catfishing. I caught a small frog and hooked it on my 3/0 EWG hook and put a bobber about three or so feet away from the hook and casted out. After a minute the catfish must have smelt it and went crazy. They were swimming all around my area and two of then tried to eat my bobber. Despite their activity, I didn't catch one. What I was wondering was why would they go after the bobber and not the bleeding frog? And would chicken breast be a good bait?

Where were you fishing? If something hitting the water stirred up the cats, it sounds like someone feeds them regularly. That would also explain why they were hanging around near the bank.

It's a pond near my house. It's kinda hidden but I guess touching the bobber after the frog makes sense so does the fact that someone feeds them. They're still colossal fish though.

If I do catch one who's head is that size, how much do to think it would weigh? How do I hold it to get the hook out?

I don't think frogs are a catfish staple. Worms, chicken live, shad, punch bait would be better choices.

Put a hook on the bobber.

Ok well the chicken breast are awesome. A cat hit it in like five or so minutes of it being in the water and he loved it! I know this because I caught him. Anyways, I'll try to put pics up tomorrow when it stops pouring here

Bullfrogs no. Sand toads will work, as well as the grass frogs. But they work mainly in rivers. Went fishing more than one time and never took any bait. Just went around and caught some of the grass frogs. Caught many many catfish with frogs. But like I said, never got a bite on them in a lake.

I caught a 12 lbs flattie on a Bull Ribbit lure. I didn't see but felt the strike and when I set the hook I thought I had finally gotten a bigger bass than my FIL. Didn't take long to realize I was mistaken.

Just sent Luis the picture of my first catfish. It's the smaller one of the three that I found. It is 28 inches from head to tail. Is that a good size?

There is a guy on here who fishes ponds and has caught some monster cats using bread balls. All I am saying is try to match what the fish eat normally there. If someone is feeding them there on a regular basis then I would figure out how to get fish pellets on my hook. BTW nice cat and welcome to catfishing.

ChuckP has the answer, if the pond is surrounded with plenty of frogs- they will eat frogs. chicken breast works great, as noted above with garlic or dead red! I've been on guided trips where every shad gets a dose of dead red with great results.
