I am off work for most of next week and would like to try some no pressure carp fishing. Here's the deal...I started baiting an area with maize last Thursday. It is about 25 ft deep, in a protected cove and near a small marina on Canyon Lake. I have been baiting at around the same time each day and plan on continuing to do so. There are very large boulders (small car sized)under the water according to graphs and charts of the area.

Does it sound like I have a somewhat decent chance of bringing some in. Is 25 ft a good depth? I have been running the bait out in a kayak about 250' off shore. If I don't go out the last 60 ft or so it would be about 15 ft deep. If I go out another 30 ft or so it drops pretty dramatically to about 45'. Where in this water column would I be most likely to succeed? What should I use for hook bait? Thanks everyone.

That will definitely bring some in. I have fished canyon in the past and baited and it brought in carp. Please keep us in the loop. I am very curious as to how big they are there.

Do what Scott said as far as the technique.

While i hardly consider myself a pro ill give my opinion. Assuming your fishing with a three rod set up, i would put two rods in the 25' spot where you have been baiting then i would put one rod closer in. As far as what hook bait to use, if you have been baiting for a while with maize i dont see any reason why you wouldnt use that as your hook bait. Since they have been chowing down on maize for a while and are used to looking for it dont throw them a curve ball by adding some thing new, speacially something that has your hook in it. Thats my two cents, hope it helps.

I would put one rod at 12 to 15 another at 25 to 30 and another at 30 to 45 then just let the fish tell you what they like

Hey everyone. I've definitely been neglecting the TFF lately but I was going through my old posts and realized I never gave anyone an update. I fished a few days after the origina post(Thangiving '11)using 2 rods. I set 1 at a depth of approximately 25 ft in a boulder field. The other rod was set at approx. 18 ft of water near a sandy area with much smaller rocks dotting the bottom.I set 1 more rod in 12 ft of water near the marina substructure baited with chicken liver as I had got a tip that the hybrids were running in the area and hungry for liver.

After approx. 20 min I hooked into my first fish. It was a common carp weighing 12 and 1/4 lbs. She came from the 18 ft sandy bottom rod. After another 80 min or so I hooked another carp. She weighed in at just over 17 lbs. She too was caught in the 18ft sandy area. Those were the only 2 carp for the night (approx 6 hrs). I did catch a handful of average cats and a below legal hybrid.
I've been back 3 x's since and managed to catch at least 1 carp each time. Biggest night was 4 carp in about 7 hrs. That was where I got the 2nd 17lber that beat the first by a few oz's. They have ranged from 8 to 17 lbs. No monsters but a lot of fun just minutes from home. All this was accomplished without specialized carp equipment or bite alarms. As a result I very well may have missed some fish. I plan on improving my gear soon. One thing (I don't mind it much but others will) is that I seem to catch about 4 cats to every carp. Latest trip was on 4-14 at which time I only caught 1 carp at 11 lbs and change.in early March I hooked a very large fish that ultimately wrapped me up on marina structure and broke me off. She was significantly more powerful than the 17's.
Cheers. Thanks for looking.
