No problem as long as you manage your drag.

might add a short shock leader of 20lbs .. maybe 18ichs.. otherwise the 10 will be fine.

As stated before, you need to have a good drag. I'd do the shock leader described by TS too. Also need to to have FRESH 10# line that has no U V, heat ,or age damage. If it is'nt fresh line, your going to lose big ones. Check your knots and watch for nicks in the line.

What he and others said.

Catching a bull red with #10 line is like trying to catch a Vette with an Pontiac G8 GXP. It can be done, but it almost takes a perfect storm of things to fall in line before it can be done.

Add a lot of patience and the ability to hang in there for at least 30 minutes. I saw a guy the other day at GFP catch a huge drum on a Zebco with 10# test line. It took him over an hour, but we finally got the fish in the net and made it to the pier.

Sorry ,but i have catching one 23lb,red fish with FIRELINE SMOKE 4LB. and many big speckled trout :

http://www.fishingworld.com/News/Read.php?ArtID=000010715

If i have catching big red fish with 4 lb. line whay i can't catch the same fish with 10lb. line.I don't want "to horse" the fish fishing with...rope.
But is just my opinion....

IF ur not trying for a record and not catch and release, stir argue then put u some line to catch fish with and catch some fish so u don`t have to worry about getting ur line broke ur asking for trouble in saltwater if u fish with anything less than 12lb don`t care what anybody says]u might be wade fishn. for trout and get a red...In the surf could be trout, red, shark, jack etc.. all i can say is go ahead and learn the hard way and a told u so....Bill

Hello Bill,

I am fishing just on the bank because for some medical reason i can't wade.,and i don't have boat.I am not trying for a record just fishing for my plesure looking to catch medium size fish and to give the fish some chance. If some big fish bite i try to fight knowing what line, reel and rod i have using.

Just i was trying to say you can catch a lot of red fish with 10lb. line if you know to fish and you have the right tackle.

Regards,

Jean

10 lb. line is great when you are wade fishing. it will handle most anything. you can slide up a little but might reduce the occasional trout in shallow water. just my .02 worth.

10lb is the minimum I would want to use. When I first started saltwater fishing, almost all my line was 10lb mono. I use heavier now. Mainly to give more control over the fish when at arms length. When your waist deep and trying to land the fish, a little heavier line comes in handy. What really gets you are bad knots and nicks in the lighter mono.

Why on earth would you want to. Why not go up to 15# or so and not have to worry about wading around for 30 minutes trying to wear a big red out. Just saying.

For one thing a heavier line reduces casting distance. In skinny water I like to cast 1/8 oz spoons for slot reds. 8-10lb test is perfect for those. You can go lighter when wading because there is no where for the fish to go. Reds don't head for the horizon anyway. Most will eventually circle you. Lighter tackle is more fun IMHO and you get the most out of each fish. Redfish are not overly affected when worked hard and can safely be revived and released.

Only time I go with heavier line is when I have structure to avoid and need the extra power to turn the fish.

10# is fine, as long as drag is set correctly. Just like fishing for anything else, it's all about correct drag. Be careful if you get snagged on a reef to check your line as it may fray. If so, just retie. Don't wanna lose a bait and a fish because you overlooked the line.

My son lives in Louisiana and tells me he wades for big trout in Big Lake (Calcasieu Lake). He fishes 12# mono on one of his curados and 30# Power pro on his other. His biggest trout so far this winter is 6lbs caught on a corky devil tied directly to braid. He said he uses braid because he doesnt want to lose an 8 dollar bait to a reef, but says the no stretch is a draw back for the paper mouths of trout. But braid for redfish would be no problem. Good luck to you!

I use 30-50lb braid on almost every setup I have. That being said, yes, you can catch reds on 10lb. Why take the chance though? Line is the same price regardless of diameter.

That is one of the most ridiculous things I have ever heard. Catching 30 redfish in 30 casts without having to retie is awesome. Making a 20 second fight last 20 minutes is just plain bass ackwards. No thanks. I rather get my fish on a stringer and line back in the water. You have fun putting down your deck with a screwdriver. I'm using a drill.

I always use 15-20 lb. If you want to cast further use 20 lb braid. I have used some 8 lb line, but one day I hooked a 40 lb Alligator Gar. Yes I was trying to catch reds. Was wading in the Sabine by Stewart Island. I fought that dang thing 40 minuets, on that 8 lb line, before I got it in. I worked it to the boat before landing it. No way I was grabbing that thing while in the water with it.

I was trying to catch white bass below of LIVINGSTON DAM on Trinity River(FISHING ON THE BANK) with 16' telescopic rod,FIRELINE SMOKE 4LB.+4LB.fluorocarbon leader,1/32oz.jig.

I hooked outside one huge gar, lenght over 5' fish(to times i bring the fish under my rod tip so i have seen the fish) and i have figthing 2:30 hours, but final, when i was trying the fish to not go over some tick line use by anothers fishermens for fishing on the buttom, break my 4lb. leader.

With 4lb.FIRELINE SMOKE i was catching many big speckled trout ih fast water at Rollover Pass.

That's the great thing about fishing ,there's no one way to do it .
To each his own . For me if your gonna use a winch you might as well just go to the market and buy your fish .

.

One latin proverb was saying "de gustibus e coloribus non disputandum".What i like is to give to the fish some chance, and for this reason i don't like to fish with..."rope" horsing the fish.
I like finess fishing but is just my pleasure, i don't say you must fish in the same way.

MERY CHRISTMAS & HAPPY HOLIDAY!!!!

I don't really think of equipment failure as giving the fish a chance. I only throw artificial. I use a single line and hook. Fish has every chance he needs. Here's a pic from a group I took out on Tuesday. 5 full limits of redfish at almost 90 pounds and released at least another 30 reds. But like you said, to each his own.

Hello "Bad Luck Guy,

I like to see you fishing on the bank for red fish at ROLLOVER PASS ,like me with artificials,to see how many red fish you catch, because i like to learn something from you.....

To be honest ,i can tell you i don't like to fish for red fish,,I LIKE TO FISH FOR SPECKLED TROUT AND FLOUNDER,but some time red fish bite my grub use to catch specks or flounder, so i try to bring the fish in my landing net.
