Agree things change each year. Here is a link (Texas Rainbow Trout Fishing: Top 5 Lures and Baits for Community Lakes) that we have been using to post information on lures and baits that have worked in the past. We summarize the information and post a summary. Each year the results support the following:

When fishing with lures make sure to bring:
- SuperDupers (Gold and Copper)
- Roostertails (White and Yellow)
- Wooley Buggers (size 14)
- Gold-Ribbed Hares Ear Nymphs (size 10-14)
- Panther Martin Spinners (Yellow w/ Black-Dotted blade)

When fishing with bait bring:
- Powerbait Trout Paste (Orange and Chartreuse)
- Kernel Corn
- White Bread
- Velveeta Cheese

Also, be prepared to switch lures/baits often, and use hooks in size 10-14 as the Trout are typically 9" to 12" in size.

Thanks for the awesome info on baits and lures. Other than the obvious answer of "when you can," when's the best day/time to go? Do y'all go on the day that the trout are stocked or do you wait a day or two? If you go on the day they're stocked, do y'all have any idea if they're generally stocked first thing in the morning or does it vary widely. I'm going to take my 5 & 6 year old daughters and want to go when they have the best chance of catching fish. Thanks!

Please note that they don't follow that schedule to a Tee. Sometimes they do it a day early or late. Best to call to confirm.

From my experience action is good on lures up to 4-5 days after stocking. Then powerbait will work well after.

Sometimes if they stock them one day, the next early morning is super good fishing.

LLELA usually gets stocked on a thursday or wednesday.... only open to the public FR-SA-SU. All things being equal, I'd ratrher fish for them on a cold cloudy day but with LLELA's schedule, I have to take what I can get.

Went out to Mesquite. Tough day as usual, didn't see anyone catching much.

Did catch one trout, decent size too, over 12".

Pathermartins, gold spinner with black body/yellow dots. Superdupers have never produced for me there. That water is dark, real dark, you need a dark lure that will send some vibrations. Pathers killed them last year, may be good this year too.

Caught two dink bass with it as well.

Opening Day of Trout Fishing ,got to love it! Went out to Lakeside Park in Duncanville, caught 2 good size trout One was about 14 inches other one was about 12 inches. Caught them on good old gold super dupers. Praise the Lord. Put up a good fight. Not much action though, might need a couple of days for them to get comfortable.

No luck on trout at Mary Jo Peckham Park these last two days. Only spent about an hour on Friday...so I don't really count that. I was out there today with a mixture of prepared baits by Berkely on slip sinker rigs for trout. The only action I got out there was from the channel cats. I tried a super duper gold/copper several times as well...and came up empty. During the 3-4 hours I was there...I think 2 people caught a total of 3 trout. It seemed like most of them had been eaten by the area birds. There was a giant flock of them in the middle of the pond while I was there. Normally there are 2-5...today there was 20+. From what I overheard a few people saying...the birds were eating up the trout like the candy over the last two days. I saw them catch at least one while I was there today as well.

Went out to Southlakes in Denton in the cold rain today with my daughter. Caught 4 fish total but no trout. Only one other person fishing. There was a comorant on a light pole that seemed too fat to fly LOL, but I didn't see any trout actually caught by bird or man. However I know they are there as I missed at least one trout on corn and missed one on a tiny wobbly shallow crank bait... It came up to hit the bait and saw me staring back a split second too soon. I'll probably try Southlakes again in about 2 weeks or so and I'll post how I did.

I should train up a comorant and put it on a leash. I'd clean up on the trout then ;-)

I went to Mesquite today in the rain. A buddy and I fished for 3 hours or so and didn't catch a thing. We threw various colors of roadrunners, mepps, a bitsy minnow, and tried some powerbait all with no luck. There was a guy that came to fish for cats right as we were leaving that said they hadn't stocked the trout yet. Anyone know if that was true? There was only one other person there fishing for trout and he hadn't caught anything all day either.

Heading out to Hurst Chisholm Park in Tarrant County this weekend. I want to test this pond this year and see if my techniques work here. I will confirm if the pond was stocked as posted on the schedule. My lines usually get dunked in Bear Creek park in Keller but that won't happen until late Jan & Feb. I always do real good when I head out and bag my limits pretty quick on Berkly Power Bait dough mixed with some anise oil or dipped in a power scent. I bag my limit and then help out the kids or other folks that are fishing for trout theres always someone that needs a hand my 7 year old daughter helps out too great fun and worth it every year. Some pointers and how to can be located if you follow my posts on this topic from my outings earlier this year.

Try this setup, I promise this presentation will work it hasn't let me down yet and I have been fishing for a while now. I give some recommendations on the tackle but any decent rod and reel combo will work I helped a couple and their son a while back he was using a Snoopy Rod and Reel combo and catching fish. I have a 6 year old daughter that loves to fish too.

Follow this setup: light tackle rod, I use a spinning reel setup with a 5' rod & 6# test for my main line and mate that with a 4# or 2# 12" leader with a size 6 Mustad (9523upbr) wide gap bait hook (other's will do but this is what I use). For bait I use the Berkeley power bait orange or tri color with glitter works real good. This is the dough bait product that you can mold around the hook. The presentation is off the bottom so you need to set this as if you would be fishing for catfish slip sinker style except you should keep in mind the tackle you are using is light don't use a 1 Oz. sinker! a 1/4 Oz will do. The power bait you mold around the hook will float up and present the bait to the trout which will smash the bait and 9 out 10 times the hook will be set on its own once set the fish will put up a decent fight you will have lots of fun.

Good luck!

Fished Denton on Saturday during the rain. Did not see anyone catch a trout, although 3 people who I met when I left said they caught 1 from 8:30 to 11:00 and one person said he caught 3 the night before on his fly rod.

I typically fish using a 2 drop loop bottom rig with a 1/4 oz weight and two snelled salmon egg hooks. I fish pink or multicolor power bait balls and change them out about every 30 min to keep them scented in the water. I usually have good luck there but did not get a bite and left early.

I also throw gold aglias, panther martins, spoons and acme castmasters. I tried a super duper until it got snagged and a castmaster but again not one bite.

I anticipate the bite will be better when the weather is better and also usually go early in the morning or in the afternoon. I do not do as well in the middle of the day.

I plan to hit Allen this weekend since its closer to home and will post how I do.

No luck finding the size 6 Mustad (9523upbr) wide gap bait hook at my local Academy or Bass Pro Shop. Finding it hard to locate online as well. The few places I've found online also charge flat rate shipping fees that double or triple the cost of the hooks...lol...
