How is Canyon Lake for crappie fishing ? I just moved into the area and also just got a boat. Any help or tips are very appreciated. Also if it is just not a crappie lake at all that is appreciated as well so I don't waste my time and will just fish for bass on Dunlap. Looking to get into something different for a little bit. Thanks

Cranes Mill park has a floating peir that people catch crappie off of-Its located on a Creek Bend but, I'm not sure that its open at this moment...Resided in the Hill Country for 10 yrs.Hopefully someone will chime in from your area-Good luck!

I cuaght 6 huge crappie on Dunlap one day fishing for bass. I kept getting bit over and over but the bait was just too big for them, so thinking hell I'll just load the boat with crappie since I couldnt catch any bass, I ran to walmart for some crappie jigs. Went right back out there to the same spot and never got another crappie, only several bass.
I've never accidentally caught one on Canyon.
I'd give Dunlap a try.

Not 100% sure, but I think whites and stripers are a better bet.

We used to do well around the slips at the lake canyon yacht club
Some of those rich sailboat owners used to give us the stink eye

There isnt good numbers at canyon or dunlap, but there are some in both. I think It may be hard to find them on dunlap you have to wait till there spawning to find numbers, but saying that crappie do spawn early so you may find them. As far as canyon Id launch as far up river as you can and fish some brush in the river channel. Both lakes the fish are kinda picky so Id bring some minnows to find them and then see if you can catch them on jigs. Thats about the best advice I can give good luck and let us know what ya find I have been wanting to give them a try. Oh allmost forgot mcqueeney is the best outa the three I think. Still not great numbers but easier to find them for begginer to the lake, but there not really any public boat ramp. Wow that was a rant

SSSHHHHH!!!!!!

Don't tell people about that! McQ is the only lake in this area that I can actually go find crappie on a regular basis. I go fish other lakes, and then when I am feeling crappy about my crappie fishing, I go to McQ to make myself feel better.

Wahoobob summed it up pretty succinctly. Canyon has Crappie, not known as a crappie lake but they are there. I have only been able to find them a ways up the river and only at night with a dropped green light. And the count isn't that great. Darn little stripers hit the minnows before Crappie can get to them. I haven't been in about a year and a half because of the UNBELIEVABLE delay in opening Cranes Mill Park, which has a boat ramp right accross from the mouth of the river. A nightime return from the river is no big deal launching from that ramp. But the next closest ramp makes it a lot more perilous. As to Dunlap, yes, there are Crappie there. But, finding them is a different story. I have tried to find them, deliberatly fishing for them, many, many times, night and day, last two years. So far, ZERO, not a single one. The only ones I know that have been caught have been caught by accident while fishing for something else.

And now you have the rest of the story from my viewpoint. Just call me Paul

Thanks everybody for the input. I'm going to give it a try for a little bit but I will have a backup plan for sure. Depending on weather probably going to hit Dunlap Saturday morning. Will let you know how the crappie fishing works out.

Please Please, I beg you. If you actually catch one at dunlap, please please, PM me so I can just go ahead and shoot myself. I would almost say I will eat my boat if you catch one, 'Almost". Good luck and don't know if you are familiar with dunlap, but remember it's low due to dam repairs and there are some stumps that could be hit now. i hit one where there shouldn't have been one and haven't been back since.

Go gettum Tiger

i have had good luck at canyon. both in the mouth of the river and in Tom's creek. usually trees in th 15 ft plus range. gotta bounce around alot, but we have done fairly well in the past.

they are easier to catch for me than those largemouth up there!
