That this time of year you go fishing and talk about deer hunting...go to deer camp and talk about crappie fishing? It kinda reminds me of what my granddad (an old oilfield driller) told me about what it took to be a roughneck. Go to the rig and talk about women, go home and talk about the rig, and when you finally get a day off, trade cars.

The last time I sat in a deer stand all I could think of was "man, I could be fishing right now" so I dont hunt any more. I'm just glad you can catch crappie all year long.....and when the weather's too bad, I stay home and tie jigs.

I'm still trying to decide if I'm fishing Thanksgiving weekend or hunting or both. This weekend I'm taking the 30.06 into the woods. I took the bow last weekend and ended up this: I read an article once by Tim Huffman. Deer hunting in the morning crappie fishing in the afternoon. What a great writer Tim is.....

The last deer I killed is hanging on my wall. He had 13 points and 14" G4. After I shot him all I could think of is now I have to clean him and my deer hunting season is over. I went a bunch more and took lots of pictures of deer and rattled some up for my buddies on the lease but got off the lease after that year and have never wanted to go again. I want to go elk hunting someday and I would love to go to the King Ranch and kill a Blue Bull(Nilgai) but other than that I just want to fish and dove, quail, or pheasant hunt.

I grew up in Alabama and could walk out the door and into the woods. In Alabama, (unless the rules have changed) you can kill a buck and a doe every day of the season with no tags. Hunting here is just not the same. When I got married, I played golf and I fished. I loved both about the same. I had to chose one or the other or get a divorce. I still love to just walk in the woods, but I am a fisherman. And still married.

I only fish now,my cuz was killed while hunting so that stop all my family from hunting. He was climbing over a barbwire fence with his gun leaning on it and his boot heel caught the top strand, gun fell over and that was it for him.

I'm leaving this Saturday for ten days in Kansas chasing quail and pheasant. It's a yearly pilgrimage for me and this is my 27th year. And gotta admit, if it weren't for my relatives wanting to talk crappie fishing, I would easily forget about the white pearch for those ten days.

What a great thread.... I love hunting and fishing both and don't plain on quitting either anytime soon. I just wish our lake hadn't gone dry this past summer so I could do both. Oh well, it's full again and restocked but gonna take awhile for um to grow up!!!

I was a professional Bass fisherman in the seventies. Won more than fifty K in three years. Introduced to traditional bow hunting in late eighties. Have the number two bow kill with my long bow in ninety three. Became a crappie fisherman because my wife liked to eat them. Now that is pretty much all I do though I do miss duck hunting and pheasant hunting with my long bow.

I moved to Texas from Louisiana about 10 years ago. In La. I always killed 3 or 4 deer every year. We had 10 doe days every year so if you wanted to put some meat in the freezer it was pretty easy.
Here the cost to hunt is just too high to justify the experience. So now I either fish for crappie or bass year round.
I worked on a Church project with 6 teenage boys last weekend, none of them had ever been hunting but they all new how to catch fish.
Seems like all the deer in East Texas live in town here anyway.
